Places To Camp For Free In Central Pennsylvania
For those looking for an isolated, inexpensive alternative to the noise and crowds of developed campgrounds, Pennsylvania offers hundreds of free campsites throughout the state. Because Central Pennsylvania has the Appalachian Mountains running right through the middle of it, the area is a prime destination for good hiking, gorgeous scenery and free camping.
Most of the sites that offer free camping in Central Pennsylvania are located on state forest lands and do not provide any amenities, though some may have a fire ring or a picnic table for guests. These types of primitive sites are typically intended for tent camping. If you want to bring a small trailer or camper van, be sure to contact the campsites district office to find out whether they are allowed or can be accommodated.
Although these campsites are free to visit, they do require registration, so remember to call ahead and reserve your spot. Most of the sites also require a camping permit for multiple-night stays. These permits are free and can be easily obtained by calling the district office.
Finally, read through both the CDC guidelines for visiting parks and recreational facilities and this brochure of camping guidelines and ethics to make sure you practice good camping etiquette. Tent Camping Jim Thorpe Camping Resort
Camp site was well-maintained & clean. Friendly people in the check-in cabin. Booked the most secluded camp site “The Grove” well in advance. As expected, we found beautiful privacy , right next to the running creek. We did not get the peace & quiet that we drove 3 hours for unfortunately. They do not patrol quiet hours or enforce loud music rules. I signed a contract to obey the rules, but apparently there is no enforcement. We suffered blaring music & a loud party until ~midnight the first night, loud music on the other side the majority of the next day & then finally a peaceful Saturday night . I have never had to call & complain at a campsite & felt terrible. The Switchback Railroad hike behind the campground to the lake was wonderful. The hike in the other direction was a bust for us due to the stretch on a very busy, fast road did not seem safe. Sadly, we have decided to stick to state camp grounds where they patrol the rules.More

Come prepared for a relaxed camping experience with an incredible view! You are required to bring your own tent and equipment to our sites. Due to the risk of spreading destructive insects or disease, please do not bring fire wood. The first bundle is on us, and each additional bundle is only $5.00. However feel free to scavenge deadwood from the forest floor, but you are not allowed to cutdown live trees. Look out for poison ivy, poison oak and sumac. We keep our campsites mowed, however if you venture into the brush or forests we recommend that you check yourself for ticks every day. Please DON’T: Hesitate to ask us if you have any questions or need anything before or during your stay.
