  • Hiking Trails there are hiking trails all over the dunes, and the surrounding forest. The park brochure says that there are 6 miles of trails. But I think that by hiking a combination of different trails, you can extend that distance.
  • Wildlife viewing there are a lot of birds in the woods, and along the lake. The park could be a great place for bird watchers. If you are lucky, you can spot some ground animals there, too. I saw deer and two foxes, and I bet, there are coyotes there, too.

Warren Dunes State Park Campgrounds

Warren Dunes State Park has three campgrounds:

  • Mount Randall campground is a modern campground with electric, running water, restrooms and showers. It has two loops. The one that is closer to the entrance has 89 campsites and 3 mini-cabins. The second loop has 90 campsites.
  • Hildebrandt campground is located just north of the Mount Randal Campground. It is semi-modern campground. It has only vault toilets and no showers. The campground has 37 campsites.
  • Group sites .

I camped in Mount Randal campground. The sites are wooded, many are shady, and provide some level of privacy from other campers. Not all of them though. There are few that are quite open. So, look at the images when making reservation. Campsite can have the maximum of 6 occupants, and two cars.

I have noticed a lot of poison ivy in some campsites. Be careful, if you are allergic to it.

The park does not allow alcoholic beverages from March 1 through September 30. For this reason there are no loud parties in the campgrounds. Actually, the campgrounds are pretty quiet all the time. However, if you are light sleeper, you will hear constant semi traffic on nearby I-94 throughout the whole night. If you are sleeping in an RV, you are probably O.K.

Michigans Warren Dunes State Park: Family Camping At The Beach

Location: Michigan

Interested in hiking or camping along Michigans gorgeous, western coast? Warren Dunes State Park, with its lakeshore beaches, towering 200 ft sand dunes, and mature forests is a perfect place to do both. Here we breakdown everything you need to know before hitting the trails or pitching your tent at Warren Dunes.

Camping Firsts

A few weeks ago, we went on our first camping trip as a family of seven at Warren Dunes State Park along Michigans southwestern coast. Weve visited a number of state and national parks along the Lake Michigan shoreline: Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, Ludington Beach State Park, & the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. However, this was our first time visiting Michigans Warren Dunes, our first time camping at a beach, and the first camping trip for our youngest two kids. Thankfully, all of these first turned out to be fun and memorable!

Camping at Warren Dunes

Warren Dunes, a ~2000 acre state park along Michigans southwestern shore, is one of the top five, most popular camping sites within the state. While it may be popular, it certainly does not feel crowded. All of the campsites are located on the wooded, inland side of the dunes. The woods provide a sense of privacy, especially at the semi-modern campsite, where we camped.

Just behind the picnic table, there was a crude trail. The kids spent quite a bit of time back in the woods playing and exploring.

Sand dunes reaching 260 feet in elevation. Lake Michigan. Stunning beauty, peace, and solitude .

If you wish to enjoy Warren Dunes in peace and natural solitude, you’ll arrive at the campground outside of the Summer season. You can make your reservationshere. Upon arrival you’ll decide between the “modern” or “semi-modern” camping loops. The semi-modern loop provides vault toilets, water spigots, fire rings, and nothing else. After scouting out and choosing a site in the modern loop you’ll find you have two electric outlets, fire ring , picnic table and a wondrously comfortable foundation of packed sand on which to pitch your tent. You’ll also find very well maintained modern restrooms and private, individual showers. If adventuring with family, the restroom facilities alone are worth the extra few dollars over the semi-modern loop, as the facilities in the rest of the state park are nothing short of abysmal.

It cannot be stressed enough that having experienced Warren Dunes in October, I would never consider visiting in Summer. On the October Sunday of our arrival, perhaps 3/4 of the sites were occupied. The grounds were lively, children ran freely between sites, and it was vibrant but slightly crowded. Come noon on Monday there were no more than 10 occupied sites throughout the entire campground. It was stunningly peaceful for the remainder of the week.

Romp With Your Dog On The Beach

Theres no need to leave your tail-wagging friend at home. Dogs are welcome on a leash in the parks campgrounds and on forested trails, boardwalks and the beach! At the northernmost buoy on the swimming beach, there is a two-and-a-half-mile stretch of beach where you and your dog can romp, play fetch, splash in the water and just relish being outdoors together. For everyones safety, keep your dog on a six-foot or shorter leash in your control at all times, and properly dispose of all pet waste in the trash receptacles.
