The top 5 campgrounds in parks near Cleveland

From April to October, Ohio campgrounds are full of RVs and tents, as Ohio residents and tourists alike enjoy the beauty of the outdoors in Ohio. Many Ohio campers also love to hike in Ohio, enjoy the best ice cream in Ohio, and those camping in the fall wont want to miss the best places to enjoy Ohio fall colors near their favorite Ohio campgrounds!

Tell us which Ohio campground is your favorite? What are your favorite things to do while camping in Ohio?

Cowan Lake State Park

Ohio camping doesnt get much better than Cowan Lake State Park, which is located in Wilmington, Ohio. This moderately sized Ohio camping spot boasts some of the best tent camping in Ohio.

The main attraction here is Cowan Lake, for which the park is named. The sprawling blue lake is an attractive backdrop from water activities, including fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, and photography. Dont fret if you left your boat at home. A wide variety of boat rentals are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

If youre not sure about hitting the waters in a flotation device, the parks free seasonal canoe lessons are a great place to fend off anxiety. Meanwhile, landlubbers can enjoy archery, basketball, volleyball, hiking, and much more.

John Bryan State Park

Some say this is the most scenic state park in western Ohio, and I might agree. Located a mile from Yellow Springs, this 752-acre park features a unique limestone gorge cut by the Little Miami Scenic River. Campgrounds, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, kayaking, fishing, and picnicking await the park visitor.

Camping is a more bare experience in the park. The family campground has 100 non-electric, partly shaded sites, so bring your lanterns. Otherwise, the sites have fire rings, picnic tables, toilets, drinking water, and the all-important dump station.

Pet owners may bring their furry friends to any site. For large delegations, a 100-person camp area is available for organized events on a reservation basis only.

This might also be a great place to try an alternative camping sleep system gaining popularity. Minimalist campers say the best camping hammocks paired with a tarp is a comfortable way to camp. All you need are two trees to tie the hammock ends on, and you drape a tarp for protection and shade.

Aquatic activities like boating and fishing are at The Little Miami River. As the river meanders, tourists will experience gigantic sycamores, steep rock cliffs, and many historical sites along the route. Anglers of all skill levels will find that there is an abundance of rock bass, smallmouth bass, and panfish.

Staying here for two nights was delightful. The property is hilly and it has beautiful scenery, not to mention gorgeous sunsets! The site are level, clean, well cared for, although we did not see an abundance of staff. It is very quiet there. The sites are well laid out, close, but not too close. The facilities were excellent.

Ottawa Overlook Backcountry Site

Buckeye Trail, Brecksville Reservation, Brecksville

As strange as it seems, Cuyahoga Valley National Park doesnt have any actual campgrounds. The only place to really camp inside of Cuyahoga Valley National Park is at the Ottawa Overlook Backcountry Site.

Run by Brecksville Reservation and located off of the Buckeye Trail, there are 3 tent sites here that can accommodate 4 people each.

Both potable water and the bathroom is located about a quarter mile from the campsite at Ottawa Point Picnic Area.

At these particular sites, 1 night is the maximum stay and you may set up your tent after 3 pm. It must be taken down by noon the following day. No alcohol or fires are permitted here, either.

You also need a permit to reserve a backcountry site here. It is free, but required you can get one here from Memorial Day until the last weekend of September. Youll also need to obtain an overnight parking permit if you are parking overnight. You can park at the Brecksville Nature Center parking lot or the Plateau Picnic Area.

This isnt exactly your typical campground situation that many national parks offer, but it is a great option for thru-hikers on the Buckeye Trail or people who would like to have an overnight backpacking trip.

Plus, it is a free camping location near Cleveland, Ohio! It is also the closest campsite to Cleveland, being only 25 minutes from downtown.
