Formation And Geologic Facts
The lakes basin was formed by normal faulting resulting from vertical motions, which caused some blocks to be uplifted. These blocks created the Sierra Nevada range on the west of the basin and the Carson range on the east. The basin was formed by down-dropped blocks, also known as grabens. This is the same type of faulting is representative of the neighboring Great Basin as well.
The Lake Tahoe Basin is the youngest of numerous extensional basins located in the Walker Lane deformation zone, accommodating approximately 12 mm/year dextral shear between the Sierra Nevada-Great Valley Block and Northern America.
Lake Tahoe Basin is basically made up of 3 main faults. The East Tahoe Fault can be found on the basins eastern part. The West Tahoe Fault is located between Emerald Bay and Tahoe City. It is the local segment of the Sierra Nevada Fault, and it advances north of the two towns. The North Tahoe Fault lies between the two previous faults, on the northern side of Lake Tahoe. The most active and possibly most dangerous fault of the three is the West Tahoe Fault.
The ancestor of todays Lake Tahoe was created when the melting snow from the surrounding mountains filled the southern, lower part of Lake Tahoe Basin. Rain and runoff water also contributed to the formation of the lake. Tahoes modern form was shaped by scouring glaciers which occurred throughout the Ice Ages and began more than one million years ago.

Camp Richardson Resort is located in South Lake Tahoe and has approximately 210 campsites located in three campgrounds. There is also a hotel and cabins available for overnight lodging. Reservations are recommended.
Badgers Den campground has 84 campsites and is located closest to the lake. Campsites are tent-only and can accommodate either 2 tents/6 people, 4 tents/12 people or 3 tents/18 people. It also has drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers.
Eagles Nest campground has 30 campsites for tents only. It also has 6 group campsites . Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers.
The RV camp has approximately 96 campsites. Partial and full hookup campsites are available. Each site also has a table fire ring and grate. Some also a have bear-proof storage box. Sites 4 to 35 are very close to the main road and are on the small side.

History Established In 1969
The backcountry is more than a recreational playground and an ecological resource. It is also the site of the historic Virginia Gold Hill Water System and an enormous amount of Comstock logging done by the Sierra Nevada Wood and Lumber Company and the Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company. Logging operations were conducted from the 1870s through the turn of the century and supplied the Comstock with the lumber and cordwood necessary for the gold and silver mines of Virginia City, Silver City and Gold Hill. Initially developed in 1873, an ingenious water system furnished the water required by extensive steam engine operations of the mines and the nearly 30,000 people of the boom towns. The system was comprised of Marlette Lake, Hobart Reservoir and an intricate system of wooden box flumes and pipelines. The Marlette Flume and another flume from the north entered a 3,994 foot tunnel that emptied onto the east side of the Carson Range and joined the Inverted Siphon, the key pipeline through Washoe Valley. This 813 psi pipeline was the highest pressure pipeline in the world at the time and represented an engineering feat that most thought could not be done. At its peak, the water system delivered up to 10 million gallons a day to the Comstock. This system, now known as the Marlette Water System is one of the original inverted siphons and is still in use today.

Camping at Lake Tahoe isnt exactly what most people expect. Those whove never been there think of getting to pitch their own tent near the water, but that isnt the case. Just across the street by the Zephyr Cove Resort is a privately owned campsite on the east side of the Lake. None of these sites are adjacent to the lake, but there are those that offer some nice views of the lake itself. Its RV sites can accommodate vehicles that are up to 40 feet long, and there are about 90 sites in total and come with access to water and cable TV hookups as well as a sewer. There are also some tent sites that are within walking or driving distance. If you want to do laundry or take a shower, you can head on to the resort. The Effect Of The Opossum Shrimp
Significant changes have been observed in the lakes food web and zooplankton population since the 1960s. Between 1963 and 1965 the opossum shrimp was introduced to Lake Tahoe, in attempt to enhance the food supply for the kokanee salmon, which was also an introduced species. The opossum shrimp was also an important food resource for the trout and would compete with juvenile fish for zooplankton. The shrimp began feeding on the cladocerans found in the lake, and managed to cause the disappearance of the species by 1971. Thanks to conservation efforts, the cladoceran population somewhat recovered in the lake since the incident.
