Camping In March Where Are The Warmest Spots
We will be camping in New Mexico March 19-26 and are looking for the warmest place to be. We need to end up in Albuquerque. We will be driving from Denver but are willing to go south. What are the warmest towns to visit in March? We like to mountain bike and hike. Any ideas out there? Thanks!
I’d probably suggest anywhere south of ABQ.
Its kind of a double edge sword though. The further south you go in order to catch some warmer weather, the stronger the spring winds tend to be.
Getting down towards Carlsbad or Las Cruces is probably going reap the best rewards warmth wise and I’d look towards the Guadalupe Mts. just south of the Carlsbad Caverns or the Organ Mts. around Deming.
The long and short of it, look for areas under 5’000 ft. elevation.
Up here, our last frost potential date isn’t until early May, so while we’re already in the throws of the spring warm up, we can get a real mixed bag until mid-April at the earliest. The last few years, we’ve had a few of our biggest snows of the year in early to mid-March around here.

Joe Skeen Campground Near Grants
Another BLM managed area, the Joe Skeen Campground is the creme de la creme if you are looking for a true campground. This is probably tops of all the best free campgrounds in New Mexico though it is limited to a seven-day stay instead of the typical 14 days.
There are several sites that have a fire ring, picnic table and shelter, and can accommodate big rigs. There are also vault toilets and trash cans.
Joe Skeen Campground is located in the El Malpais National Conservation Area, so there are a ton of things to see and do here. There are sandstone cliffs, canyons, the La Ventana Natural Arch, the Chain of Craters Backcountry Byway, and the Cebolla and West Malpais Wilderness Areas. There is lots of hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography opportunities.

Located on the Colorado-New Mexico state line six miles northeast of Raton, Sugarite Canyon State Park is a nature-lovers paradise with an abundance of pristine natural landscapes ranging from meadows, forests, creeks, and lakes that are teeming with a diverse range of fauna and flora. City Of Rock State Park
City of Rocks State Park got its name from monolithic blocks that formed over 30 million ago carved from wind and water. The park is found between Deming and Silver City and it offers wildlife viewing, mountain biking trails, hiking, camping, and picnic areas. There is also a botanical garden, bunny ear cacti, and a star observatory inside the park.
All the sites in the campground have water and electricity, as well as primitive camping sites that are free to visit. Amenities include vault toilets, showers, and restroom with hot water.
