Plan On Bouldering Easier Routes In Joshua Tree Than In The Gym
The term sandbag became very familiar to us while bouldering in Joshua Tree. A sandbagged route is a route that is deceptively more difficult than what is advertised.
Usually, when transitioning from indoor to outdoor climbing, you should expect to start on routes 1-2 grades easier than the gym. However, our experience at Joshua Tree was we were bouldering routes 2-4 grades easier than the gym! .
Even with one of us climbing V4s in the gym, many of the Joshua Tree V0s were quite difficult. Now, this is probably because of a mix of many reasons. But, if you are a beginner-intermediate boulderer, like us, you may have a similar experience. Its good to go into it with proper expectations!

Camping In Joshua Tree
I’m planning a 1 or 2 night camping trip. I know there are a bunch of campsites. Has anyone stayed at any of them ? I guess I’m wondering if one is better than the rest or if we should just go to the one closest to us. I know they all have fire grates and I guess that’s our only requirement. Any suggestions/insight is greatly appreciated.

What To Bring To Joshua Tree Ca
Joshua Tree National Park is located in the Mojave desert of Southern California and the weather is typical for a desert climate and the temperatures can fluctuate wildly. It can be super hot by day and then drop to freezing as soon as the sun dips below the horizon. The region is known for its wind, and if the thousands of wind turbines that dot the lower valley arent a dead give away, then we dont know what is.
The weather can change very quickly from warm and sunny to cold and very windy within an hour. We will be spending our time mostly climbing in the shade if its warm and if its chilly we will do our best to follow the sunshine.
**Update on our camping situation: Youve been upgraded! We will base out of an old homestead cabin on acreage just outside the park. There are a couple of beds available for you to sleep in but not enough for everybody. If you are flying in and want to travel without camping equipment please let us know as soon as possible. Since there are only a few beds available, we will do our best to match up those requests on a case by case basis.
Not to worry though, there is plenty of room to pitch a tent on the property and you will have full access to all the amenities the house has to offer such as: bathroom, shower, fully equipped kitchen and living room to hang out in. If you need to borrow any camping equipment please let us know and we can help you out.
