Things To Do In Fort Mountain State Park

One of the most notable parts of Fort Mountain State Park is the ancient, 855-foot-long stone rock wall located near the crest of the mountain.

It is believed to have been built by early indigenous Americans as a defense fortification, and/or possibly for spiritual and ceremonial purposes.

Another piece of Georgia history located within the park is the stone fire tower that was first built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which allowed rangers to see fires from up to 40 miles away.

It can be reached by hiking the one-mile CCC Fire Tower Trail. An open house of the tower is available every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm.

Mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, kayak/canoeing, and miniature golf are also popular activities, and theres a lakeside beach for swimming during summer.

Located only fifteen minutes outside of the bustling city of Atlanta, Panola Mountain State Park is a the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Areas crown jewel and a haven for all kinds of outdoor recreation, for all ages. The state park offers a playground for children, picnic areas, paved trails for walking and biking, forested trails for running and hiking, and a variety of programs, including tree-climbing, birding, orienteering, geocaching, and archery. Amicalola Falls State Park

This beautiful state park in north central Georgia gets its name from the Cherokee word for “tumbling waters”– appropriate, given that the park’s signature attraction is a 729-foot waterfall, which the Georgia State Parks website maintains is the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River.

Amicalola Falls State Park has miles of hiking trails, including an 8.5-mile approach to Springer Mountain, the southern end of the Appalachian Trail. The 829-acre park is known for its mountaintop lodge, but camping also is available. The park’s campground includes 24 RV, trailer and tent campsites with hookups. Cottages also are available for rent. The park includes a restaurant, visitor center, four picnic shelters and a gift shop.

North Georgia Campgrounds: Don Carter State Park

One of the more recently established state parks in Georgia, Don Carter State Park is located on the north end of Lake Lanier, which spans across 38,000 acres and provides outstanding opportunities for water recreation. There are also many camping options within the state park for overnight guests, including two-bedroom cabins situated on the wooded hillsides, an RV campground, and a primitive campground for hammocks and tent camping. The cottage loop and campground are gated, with access just for campers. Don Carter State Park also features boat ramps, multi-use trails, a bathhouse, and a sandy swimming beach.

These developed tent camping only campgrounds are buried deep in the North Georgia Mountains west of Lake Burton and along the headwaters of Wildcat Creek. The creek, seasonally stocked with rainbow trout, runs directly adjacent to the campsites and provides for an astounding setting, so be prepared to capture nature at its best, and bring your camera. Things To Do In Fort Yargo State Park

Fort Yargo Lake is the main attraction here. It boasts a large sandy beach for swimming, good fishing opportunities, two boat ramps, a 75-person Lake Pavilion, and a 150-person Beach Pavilion .

The fort for which this North Georgia park was named was one of four built in 1793 to help protect the states early settlers from the Creek and Cherokee Indians. The most commercialized of all these, it really isnt primitive but I figured I would add one almost mainstream site. Consisting of 44 campsites in four loops. Loop B has ten tent sites, and loop D has 18 tent sites. Hot showers, two boat docks, swimming beach, boat ramp, playground.

Ten camping sites along a fresh mountain stream and a peaceful atmosphere that is only 15 minutes from the famous alpine village of Helen, Georgia. This site also has restrooms!

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

No two visits to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge will bethe same. Its a sprawling wilderness refuge with plenty of opportunities forrecreation and relaxation. The landscapes are varied, and always changing.There are three major entrances, each with a different experience to offer.

The main entrance is the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area. This is a more developed part of the refuge. Youll want to come here if youre looking for a little more structure while still enjoying the natural habitat of Georgia. This area offers guided boat tours, kayak rentals, hiking trails, and a visitor center.

The second entrance is at the Stephen C. Foster State Park. This park is located in a cypress swamp. Here you could enjoy boat trails, fishing, and interpretive programs. There are plenty of campsites including tent sites, cabins, and RV sites. If youre feeling adventurous, you could explore over 120 miles of wilderness canoe trails.

The third entrance is the Okefenokee Swamp Park. Okefenokee is full of dynamic and varied landscapes, plants, and wildlife. Its not quite as busy as the other two entrances, but has just as much to offer with interpretive displays, boat tours, and a boardwalk.
