Camping Near La Junta
An hour from Pueblo, La Junta is a gateway to the southeast. Theres plenty of amenities in this town of nearly 7,000 people. La Junta has its own attractions to see as well, like Bents Old Fort. There is a nice KOA Journey right in town, as well as several other campgrounds within a reasonable drive.

Camping Near Limon In Eastern Colorado
Known as Eastern Colorados Hub City, Limon makes a convenient basecamp for exploring the Great Plains. There are numerous campgrounds near town, with easy access from both Denver and Colorado Springs.
The drive to Limon is less than an hour and a half from both of Colorados largest cities. Soak in the ambiance of the prairies and get away from the crowds. There are some exciting activities on the Eastern Plains to discover, including its campgrounds.

Colorado Rv Camping La Junta
Free Colorado RV camping is available throughout the Comanche National Grassland. This area of southeastern Colorado is home to Antelope, Coyote, Fox, 270 species of birds, rattlesnakes, and more. This area encompasses parts of Pinion Canyon, and is home to the largest dinosaur track site in North America at Picketwire Canyon. Vogel Canyon offers Indian petroglyphs as well in the area.

Straddling the Santa Fe Trail, this High Plains campground lies minutes from Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site. Costumed interpreters welcome you to the reconstructed adobe-walled trading post. In La Junta, the Koshare Indian Museum houses an impressive collection of Native American art/artifacts. A half hour south, Picketwire Canyon features the largest known trackway of dinosaur footprints in North America.
KOA’s urban meets country setting is within walking distance of restaurants and shopping. We have high-speed WiFI! Get wet and cool off on our waterslides, or relax in the rec room, where you can read, watch TV or play pool, cards and games. Take advantage of the air-conditioned laundry room and restrooms. Groups also enjoy the large meeting room and use of the full kitchen.

We are located on the western edge of La Junta on U.S. Highway 50, on the south side of the road, behind Viaero Wireless and next to Walmart.Eastbound on U.S. Highway 50 : We are exactly 2.4 miles east of the Conoco in the town of Swink. Go one block east past the signalized intersection at Conley Road/Country Road 26.5 and turn right/south on Rogers Road at Viaero Wireless.

How We Choose This Campground
This trip was our first experience at a KOA campground. We chose it based on reviews and the proximity to the National Historic Sites. We tried to get a reservation at the John Martin Colorado State Park because it is on Our Bucket List. There were a limited number of sites available, but none of them appeared to be shady. After our last trip, Our Perfect Trip, we decided to choose an easier campground experience with no crazy wind or sun conditions. Other factors that influenced our decision were the playground and pool!
There were some conveniences close by to the KOA Campground in La Junta that made life easier. There was a McDonalds about five minutes down the road, which helped with the coffee situation in the morning. We were also within walking distance to a Walmart for some much-needed and forgotten aspirin. There was a Village Inn which we stopped in for lunch after a long morning out. It wasnt roughing it, but it was easy and fun!
Vogel Canyon Recreation Area
This area set in scenic Vogel Canyon still has petroglyphs and rock art created by the indigenous people who once lived here. Located on a tributary of the Purgatorie River, this is an excellent area to spot wildlife in their native habitat. Camping is allowed in the parking area only. Horseback riding is one of main attractions with a few amenities in place for equestrian campers. This is a very popular area in spring and late summer.

Cadillac Jacks Rv Park
Park the RV, set up camp, with anything you might need for your stay just a few yards away. Thats the locale of this RV park in the small Colorado town of Calhan. Diners, convenience stores, sports bars, and sandwich shops are all adjacent to this site. A clean, quiet stay awaits the weary camper with the Colorado mountains waiting in the west.

John Martin Reservoir The Point
Located on the north shore of John Martin Reservoir, this large campground has just the basics provided for the camper. Amenities such as showers, electricity, water, laundry and a fish cleaning station are available at the Hasty Campground accessible to the east via a connecting loop. John Martin Reservoir is a popular fishing spot year-round, even during the usual mild winters in the area.

Located close to Lamar, a town with ample restaurants and amenities, this is a great spot to stay on your travels through Colorado.

Camping Near La Junta And Lamar Around Comanche National Grassland
Located an hour apart on US-50, La Junta and Lamar both make a fantastic basecamp for exploring Southeast Colorados many fascinating attractions. Sitting between the two towns, John Martin Reservoir offers lakeside campgrounds open year round.
To the south of La Junta and Lamar is the Comanche National Grassland. It holds free dispersed camping everywhere, except for Picketwire Canyon. This unique landmark holds rock art, historic ruins and dinosaur tracks. While visiting put Picketwire Canyonlands on your day trip itinerary.
Lamar, La Junta and Trinidad are all connected via the Santa Fe Trail Byway. This scenic highway traces the old historic Santa Fe Trail, with numerous things to see along the way, including some ghost towns. Plus theres some cool campgrounds on the route to accommodate both tents and RVs.

Koa Campground In La Junta Colorado
We stayed at the La Junta KOA Journey Campground in La Junta, Colorado, as part of a multi-day camping trip. We had not visited the small town of La Junta before. We drove the scenic route, avoiding almost all highways, which ended up taking us at one point along the Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway.
We visited the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site on our way to the campsite. The drive from the historic site to the campground is about 1.5 hours. After a good nights sleep at the campground, we drove 15 minutes to Bents Old Fort National Historic Site.

Reminder: Burn First Aid
As a friendly Public Service Announcement, do not touch the metal pole used to roast marshmallows with your fingers. If you do, your fingers will look like a seared hot dog. I was reminded of this slightly painful lesson when my youngest son handed the hot metal pole to me. Rather than grabbing it by the handle, I grabbed it by the hot part.
My oldest son was quick to remind me that first aid was necessary. He had me put my hand under the conveniently located sink at our site. My kids made a rule that for the remaining part of the day I was not allowed to hold the metal pole because it was too dangerous. My kids are funny and right, sometimes.
