Free Rv Camping In Texas

What People Are Saying About Midessa Oil Patch Rv Park

FREE TEXAS RV PARKS / FREE CAMPSITES IN TEXAS / -Courtesy of Texas Towns

The owners keep this park in remarkably good shape, focusing on watering the grass in the playgrounds and enclosed pet park, which my little dog and I loved. Id stay here again. The owners provide bottled water due to the high nitrate level in the water a nice accommodation. The rates are more than fair. God bless the owners, who live on-site. And their pride of ownership is evident. And there are plenty of trees, offering some relief from the sun. Jim, Yelp Review

Free Rv Camping Vs Free Rv Parking

The first thing to understand is that free RV camping is not the same thing as free RV parking. Free RV Parking locations are places where you generally stay one night for free and you cant really set up and camp. You just park, get some shuteye and leave in the morning.

Free RV Camping, on the other hand, entails staying multiple days in an RV at a specific location. You will find most of these free sites on public land. There are also some free RV camping sites on private property. For instance, timber companies will often allow camping on land they own. However, the majority of the free RV camping sites will be found on public land.

We cover the best free RV camping places in this article along with some suggestions for free overnight RV parking too.

Free Campgrounds In Texas With Hookups

Ancient Oaks RV Park

Weve mentioned before that Texas is a great place to go RVing if youre looking to travel on a budget. The state park system here is fantastic, and by purchasing a state park pass, you can save a ton of money. On top of that, there are plenty of free things to see and do in this beautiful and diverse state.

All that said, the best money-saver of all is something weve yet to write about: the free campgrounds.

Many people are completely unaware of the fact that most states offer a handful of free RV parking locations for travelers to enjoy as they pass through. Often, these are found in smaller communities, and usually, they are nothing more than an empty parking lot.

Texas is different from many other states, in that rather than having just a few of these RV parking areas, it hosts a huge number of them. Not only that, but many of these little campgrounds even feature electric hookups and water! In some cases, there is even a sewer dump.

Obviously, finding such a gem is great for the budget, and finding a whole collection of them is incredible. In order to help you camp on a budget, were going to use this article to share all of the free campgrounds in Texas with hookups that we know of. This will allow you to tour the state without spending a dime on lodging, something many campers would never even dare dream of.

Free Rv Camping On Beach

I heard there are places you can camp for a few days on the beach for free. We have a large RV but don’t need hook ups. Anyone know where this might be? Mostly interested in the Mustang Island and North Padre area. Thanks!

I don’t know of any free locations on the beach there, but I will tell you we changed our plans to cam in our rv on the beach after doing a little research on the poor effects the sand and salt water has on rvs.

Free Rv Camping In National Parks

RV Texas | FREE RV Camping ON the Beach DURING A STORM! || Living in an RV

National Parks are a different animal altogether. There are 59 areas that have an official designation as a national park. Managed by the National Park Service, these are historical and protected areas in the United States and include things like national monuments, seashores, and other places of historical interest. For a free list of US National Parks just click here!

National Parks can be vast, such as the Grand Canyon or Yosemite National Parks. They can sometimes be as small as a single building such as the Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial in Pennsylvania. Many areas designated as National Parks do not offer camping, and of the few that do, few provide campsites suitable for RVs.

However, all is not lost. There are a few National Parks that allow overnight RV parking, but generally camping is restricted to established campgrounds.

As an alternative, there are areas located just outside a National Parks boundaries that offer free RV camping. And sometimes they even have a great view of the National Park.

Three examples are:

Tips When Rv Camping For Free

It is essential to keep the size of your vehicle in mind as you venture out into more remote sites. When it comes to dispersed RV camping locations, often, the smaller the RV, the better. You dont want to get stuck and then have a long walk through rough country to get help.

Free RV camping is widely available on public lands throughout the western USA. And to some lesser extent in the eastern US, where there is much more privately owned property. Some states allow free or low-cost RV camping on public lands. As an example, Arizona offers a public lands recreation permit that allows free RV camping on state lands. While it is not entirely free, it is pretty darn close.

In cities and large towns, you will be able to find places to park for a night or two before moving on. Long term free RV camping sites are usually located off the beaten path. You will find them in rural and wilderness locations. Smaller RVs with good ground clearance are best for these types of campsites. Make sure you have a full tank of gas before you leave the last town on your route. You will also need groceries and other essentials before you leave civilization.

Learning how to find free RV camping sites is worth the effort. A slow paced low-cost lifestyle outside of the rat race is what most of us are looking for. Let me show you how its done!

Why Is Free Camping In Texas So Hard To Find

The reason for the lack of free camping in Texas dates back to 1845 when the United States wanted Texas to join the union.

Texas would only agree to statehood if it got to keep most of the 225 million acres of unsettled land that was legally owned by the Republic of Texas. The feds agreed.

When you get to Texas youll find it harder to enjoy the kinds of free Bureau of Land Management and U.S. National Forest campgrounds found in other western regions.

The Lone Star State can be tough on a campers budget, but thankfully youll find some free locations to take a load off your wallet. Just point your rig to the 21 different Texas Wildlife Management Areas that allow overnight camping.
