Seaquest Near Mt St Helens

I really enjoyed the unique fauna and the denseness of the forested campsites here. The campground that sits right across from the Mount Saint Helens Visitor Center. My kids loved the playground and there are easy hikes from the campground. This is a great campground for a relaxing weekend in nature or for a wonderful educational experience. Its also nice if you are on a road trip through the center of Washington since its a very short detour off Interstate 5.

Free Or Reduced Rates For Campground Hosts:

If you have more flexibility in your schedule if you are retired, homeschool, etc being a campground host might be an option for you. Typically you can get free rates to camp in exchange for being available to help & answer questions for the campers. The minimum stay is typically one month, though, but this might be a fun option for the summertime if you plan ahead.

You can find available campgrounds that need hosts by searching this website for National Parks & Forests all around the country. I found a number of locations in Washington and Oregon, so definitely check that site out to see if theres an option that will work for you. I would think youd need to schedule this out far in advance though.

Let us know if you have other ideas of ways to get discounts or free passes for camping!

Hells Canyon Rv Resort

To be honest, we rarely stay at full service RV parks when we travel so I dont have a lot of recommendations for this section, however, I was very impressed with Hells Canyon RV Resort. I loved that it was right on the water, there was a pool and jacuzzi that were both open, the showers were free, hot, and very clean, and the sites themselves were big rig friendly. If you find yourself on the Idaho/Washington border near Lewiston, this is a great RV park.

Grayland Beach State Park

Tucked between two coastal towns, Grayland doesnt see near the number of visitors as other state-run campgrounds along the Washington coast, but its hard to understand why. Access to a huge beach, plenty of trails, and large and private sites are a huge draw to Grayland Beach State Park. Plus, the sites are well protected with trees to prevent fierce Pacific winds from getting to your tent.

Hidden gem on the coast! Great tent and yurt sites, lots of water access, and trails in the area. The Dyrt camper Mary C.

Camping On The Olympic Peninsula

Forested campsites tucked into river bends, volcanic mountains casting shadows over soaring kingfishers, Washington is archetype camping.

For all of the Pacific Northwests dramatic landscapes, the Olympic Peninsula is perhaps the wildest. A massive Mount Olympus rises from sea level to nearly 8000, its western slope considered the wettest place in the continental US. Titans live here, some in the form of ancient trees, others as waterfalls, all in submission to their volcano overlords. Salmon live and die in their uphill battle to revisit their original delivery room so their own spawn can one day carry on the same tradition, while eagles perch pristine from branches larger than most trees found elsewhere in the world, when not choosing to become soaring silhouettes above.

Though the coast is peppered with Washington state park camping, its Olympic National Park that steals the show in this temperate rainforest.

Sequim Bay State Park

Tucked away in Sequim Bay, Washington coast camping at Sequim Bay State Park offers respite from the gale winds that often batter the Pacific coastline while still giving campers the sound of saltwater lapping the shore, tidepools, and local sea life. The sites are also large enough for big rigs to pull through, and the token showers are only .50 per 3 minutes. If youre interested in boat camping this is the place! Moorage spots are available nearby in Sequim Bay.

We stopped for lunch and decided to stay the night because it was so nice. The Dyrt camper Angela A.

Pros And Cons Of Dispersed Camping

When youre dispersed camping, you must be well-practiced in Leave No Trace Principles. For the most part, it will just be you, your tent and the landno bathrooms, no showers, no trash cans. Pack out what you brought in, and pick up any additional trash you find for extra credit.

You also have to accept more risks. While there may be USFS Rangers in the area, outside of a designated campground you lose the safety in numbers factor, especially with regards to the elements and wildlife. If youre camping in bear country, bring your own bear canister and spray. If youre in the desert, bring extra water and appropriate shade. If theres a fire ban, its your responsibility to know about it before you go and to obey it at all times.

That being said, there are lots of benefits to camping on public lands. For one, its free! Theres also a good chance you and your crew will be the only ones out thereyoull have lots more privacy than in a developed campground, and a lot more freedom.

: But with that freedom, comes responsibility.

Youre camping on public landyour land. Its your responsibility to take care of both the land and yourself while youre out there. Happy camping!

Dispersed camping not your thing? You can still find greater privacy camping on privately-owned lands listed on Hipcamp. Search for campgrounds Bookable on Hipcamp near you.
