Free Camping On South Carolina’s Coast

Looking for Free Camping | Low Country, South Carolina

We should clarify that much of this is camping near the coast instead of directly on the beach. It is rare to find parking permitted directly on the sand anywhere in the Southeast United States, and South Carolina is no exception.

What you will find, however, are free places to camp that put you within miles of the Atlantic. Basecamp experiences, if you will.

Several of these sites can be found in the Francis Marion National Forest and adjacent, state-run Santee Coastal Reserve Wildlife Management Area, located about 60 miles south of Myrtle Beach. The wildlife management area offers a handful of campsites situated in a live oak grove. Meanwhile, the national forest’s offerings include largely dispersed camping in the form of hunting camps like Elmwood Recreation Area. Nearby Halfway Creek Trail Campground, a more formal but still free campground includes actual sites that include picnic tables and fire rings.

Kings Mountain National Military Park

Outside Blacksburg, near the border of South Carolina and North Carolina, is an incredible national military park. It honors the Battle of Kings Mountain and was an important victory by the American Patriots over the Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. In fact, Thomas Jefferson said the battle was the turn of the tide of success. You can stand on the battlefield where this pivotal battle occurred and stroll along a mile-and-a-half paved trail with exhibits that showcase important battle events.

In the Visitor Center, you can watch a short film that provides an overview of the battle, and check out the museum and its rare original Ferguson rifle. There are three back-country hiking trails to choose from, as well as horse trails. No RV camping is available in the park, but there are campgrounds nearby, including the highly-rated Iron City Campground.

How To Find Free Camping Near Me

Below is a collection of up-to-date resources we use to find free campsites when were traveling.

*iOverlander : This app is full of user-submitted campsites as well as other traveler-friendly information like dump stations and water fills. However, since the app relies on users to add and update content, its not 100% accurate, so its worth doing some additional research once youve found a spot you are interested in. But, generally speaking, its a great place to start!

The Dyrt PRO: The Dyrt PRO offers some great resources to help you find free camping, including filters to find free campsites, offline National Forest and BLM map overlays, and a trip planner. You can try it for 90 days free by using our code FRESH90 here!

*Free Roam : This desktop and mobile app has some really helpful features. First, you can toggle on National Forest and BLM overlays, making it super easy to find public land. You can also toggle on a satellite map and zoom in to see what the roads/turnouts look like, making it easier to identify if an area might be suitable for boondocking. Second, you can also overlay Motor Vehicle Use Maps, so you dont have to go searching for the PDFs on the national forest website. Third, you can use the map layers to show cell coverage and national forest/BLM land. If you create a free account, you can also save sites or your own waypoints, making it great for multi-day planning.

What Is Free Camping

Free camping is exactly what it sounds like: a place you can legally camp without having to pay a fee. Of course, nothing is free and most locations are taxpayer-supported , but there is no cost to the individual user on a per-night basis.

There are a bunch of names used to describe different types of free camping. Here are some of the more common ones weve seen:

Dispersed Camping: This is the official term used by the National Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to describe free camping. If youre reading a US government website that refers to dispersed camping in an area, theyre talking about camping in non-developed areas usually without a daily fee. If youre going to call up a ranger station to ask , use the term dispersed camping and theyll know exactly what youre talking about.

Boondocking: We hear this informal term used most commonly among RVers, road trippers, and other long-term travelers to refer to all manner of free camping. Everything from camping in a national forest to spending a night at a Walmart can be considered a form of boondocking. This term is used a lot on personal websites and forums.

Dry Camping: The term dry camping is similar to boondocking, but we hear it less often. However, it does accurately describe the fact there will be no available water, which is the case at just about every free camping location weve visited.

Boondocking On The East Coast

Yes, it is different. It is more limited. But it can still be done. There are some amazing, beautiful places to boondock on the east coast. What weve noticed is you need to be more flexible. If there is a certain destination you need or want to be in, you may not find the availability like you can out West. But if youre flexible, and can explore more, youll find a lot of places, and some amazing things you may not have even known about.
