• Ruby-throated hummingbirds

Rapid Run Natural Area

The 39 acres surrounding the Rapid Run Nature Trail is one of the first State Park Natural Areas. Natural areas are set aside to provide locations for scientific observation of natural systems, to protect examples of typical and unique plant and animal communities, and to protect outstanding examples of natural interest and beauty. A discovery guide, called, The Shrouded Forest, describes the one-mile loop trail and suggests activities to explore the trail. The guide is available at the park office, Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center, or at the Rapid Run trailhead.

Trough Creek State Park

Trough Creek State Park in Huntingdon County is a spectacular winter wonderland, as the steep Trough Creek Gorge traps the cold air between its walls, allowing Nature to work its magic.

Copperas Rocks along Great Trough Creek are home to dazzling icicles than hang precariously from the mountainside.

The Suspension Bridge along the Balanced Rock Trail offers an elevated view of Great Trough Creek and the ice flows upon it.

R. B. Winter State Park is a Pennsylvania state park on 695 acres in Hartley Township, Union County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It is in the ridge and valley region of Pennsylvania and is surrounded by Bald Eagle State Forest. R. B. Winter State Park is in a shallow basin that is surrounded by ridges. Halfway Lake is the central recreational focus of the park. The park is 18 miles west of Lewisburg on Pennsylvania Route 192.

The park was originally called “Halfway Dam State Park”, but was renamed “R.B. Winter State Park” on May 23, 1957 to honor state forester Raymond Burrows Winter, who was instrumental in establishing the park and had worked there and the surrounding state forest for 45 years.

Best Trails In Raymond B Winter State Park

Raymond B. Winter State Park, located in the Ridge and Valley Province of central Pennsylvania, is home to a great network of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and cross country skiing. Rb Winter State Park And Hook Natural Area Vistas

I recently did some exploring in the Bald Eagle State Forest. My plan was initially to hike the Allegheny Front Trail, but I ended up not having enough time. So, I drove to R.B. Winter State Park and hiked through the Rapid Run Natural Area. This short, easy trail explores an old growth hemlock forest along Rapid Run and rhodo jungles with carpets of moss. I also walked around the small, scenic lake and hiked a little ways on the Mid State Trail. This park is very scenic, set between forested ridges and features clear streams that tumble down the valleys beneath hemlocks and pine. The stone dam that creates Halfway Lake also has a nice waterfall that compliments the setting. The park does have an out of the way feel to it. R.B. Winter State Park is a trailhead to the Mid State Trail and features many other trails that offer a variety of dayhiking options.

Next I stopped by Sand Bridge State Park, which has the distinction of being the smallest state park in PA. It was little more than a picnic area along Rapid Run with rhodo jungles.

Ill be returning to the Bald Eagle State Forest soon. I definitely plan to hike the Hook Natural Area this summer. The insanely rugged Goosenecks gorge also looks fascinating, if not intimidating from all the vast talus slopes. That will have to wait until Autumn.

Laurel Mountain State Park

Laurel Mountain State Park features a family-oriented downhill skiing area and beautiful views of the rolling countryside of the Ligonier Valley.

The slopes and trails provide opportunities for skiers and snowboarders of all levels and the lodge is a cozy place to eat and enjoy the view.

Opened in 1939, Laurel Mountain was one of the first ski areas in Pennsylvania.

Tent Camping At Rb Winter State Park

I have no idea why , but I was always afraid of camping in a tent when Evelyn was a baby. I had done it myself many times, but just needed some extra security when she was younger. Since her first summer, we have always done our camping in my parents pop up camper or a cabin. But, now that shes a bit older, I felt ready to try camping in a tent. So, for our first tenting adventure, we reserved 2 nights over the 4th of July weekend at R.B. Winter State Park. My dad, aunt, and cousins were also staying in the park and my brother and his girlfriend decided to join us on our site. We also decided to take our dog . I was praying that it would all work out. Fortunately, I can report that everything went pretty smoothly, aside from a flat air mattress and a scraped knee.

Our three days at camp were just relaxing and fun. We went for walks, played in the sand on the beach by the lake, cooked over the fire, made smores, and picked on each other. I love that Evelyn can be entertained with barely anything to do. She finds her own fun. She loved just going in and out of the tent and curling up inside the sleeping bags, staking a claim on her sleeping spot right away. The kids enjoyed playing in the creek, lounging in the hammock, and exploring the paths. I even got in on the fun. I think that our dog, Moxie, didnt quite know what to make of all of it, but she was very well behaved and I would definitely take her again in the future.

Greenwood Furnace State Park

Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon County offers many gratifying scenes for winter sight seekers.

Aside from the iconic spillway and dam on Greenwood Lake, the namesake Greenwood Furnace looms even larger when surrounded by a blanket of snow.

And while the water at Greenwood Lake is always a bit on the chilly side, even in the summer, its positively frigid in the winter!

Nps Campgrounds On The Parkway In North Carolina

Good to Know

Parkway Campgrounds are normally open from May October. Fees are charged on a per night basis, which includes two adults over age 18. Children accompanied by an adult camp free.

Reservations may be made for some sites in advance. As a general rule, demand is higher on weekends and holidays. Some first-come first-serve sites are offered at ALL Parkway campgrounds.

Rapid Run Natural Area

The first settlers in the area found a very dense forest that was according to Conrad Weiser, “so thick that for a mile at a time we could not find the place the size of a hand, where the sun could penetrate, even in the clearest day…” Some examples of this dense forest still stand today at R. B. Winter State Park. The Rapid Run Natural Area is 39 acres of land set aside “to provide a location for scientific observation of natural systems, to protect an example of a typical and unique plant and animal community, and to protect and outstanding example of natural interest and beauty.” This natural area has been largely untouched since it was last logged for timber in 1850. Pileated woodpeckers can be seen in this area. Barred owls also live in the Rapid Run Natural Area. Vernal pools fill each spring to provide water for fairy shrimp, caddis-flies, spotted salamanders, and wood frogs.
