Fond Du Lac has 55 campsites including traditional tent sites and RV campsites.
The campground also has free wifi, a playground, horseshoes, bean bag toss, and a cabin for games.
There are also a few hiking trails on the campground that you can explore.
If youre staying at one of the waterfront sites, you can also go boating or hang out on the shore.

Devils Kettle Trail Judge Cr Magney State Park Grand Marais Mn
Carved out of the Superior National Forest between Grand Marais and Hovland on Hwy. 61, Judge C.R. Magney State Park stretches inland from Lake Superior, along the swift and tumbling Brule River. The campground is car accessible, but the sites are heavily wooded and well spaced. One of the parks highlights is the Devils Kettle: A double waterfall in which one cascade continues downriver, while the other disappears mysteriously into a cauldron in the riverbed.

For something a little bit different, stay at one of the cozy cabins at Winnebago Springs.
Winnebago Springs is an event venue that also has a few cabins available for Minnesota camping.
This is definitely a great opportunity for glamping.

Another gem within an hour of the Twin Cities, Wild River State Park showcases the rugged beauty of the St. Croix River before it gets anywhere near civilization. Forestville Mystery Cave State Park is a really cool place for camping in Minnesota state parks.
The Forestville portion of the state park is actually a historic village that is from the 19th century.
It has been restored to its original 19th-century appearance, which is a really cool place to check out when youre at this campsite in Minnesota.
Mystery Cave is actually the largest cave in Minnesota. You can even take tours of the cave!
So this state park is full of cool attractions that make it one of the coolest campgrounds in Minnesota.
There are over 100 individual campsites. 23 are electric seasonal sites and there is also a horse campground.
If you want to try glamping, they also have five camper cabins.
Dispersed Camping Rules & Regulations
One of our favorite things about dispersed camping is the lack of special permits, advance reservations, and the general ease of heading out on a camping trip. Dispersed camping in Minnesota is no different, although it is still important to familiarize yourself with the relevant rules.
It is best to check current regulations with the relevant USFS or Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, but you should plan on adhering to the following as outlined by the USFS:
- Do not camp in areas near trailheads, picnic areas, or developed campgrounds.
- Keep your campsite small.
- Practice Leave No Trace principles more on that below!
Leave No Trace Principles & Dispersed Camping
One of the most important considerations when dispersed camping is to follow Leave No Trace principles. This will minimize your impact and ensure your campsite can be enjoyed by future visitors. Here are the seven principles of Leave No Trace camping:
Six Mile Lake is a designated dispersed camping area in Chippewa National Forest near the small town of Bena, MN. There are twelve campsites here, and several of them can accommodate larger RVs and trailers. This make Six Mile Lake a good option for those with larger rigs or who just want a bit more space.

Stony Point Campground Chippewa National Forest
Easily accessed from the city of Walker, three hours north of Minneapolis, the Stony Point Campground places visitors onto the shores of Leech Lake. The campground is a great launching point into the surrounding Chippewa National Forest. The campground features 44 reservable sites all sharing access to the lake, as well as flush toilets, shower stations, and clean drinking-water spigots.
RVs are welcome at Stony Point, and campers are encouraged to use the boat ramp and two different harbors. The campground also provides easy access to a swimming beach and picnic area. The campground doesn’t just entice anglers, however. With hiking and biking trails like the North Country Trail and Paul Bunyan State Trail surrounding the area, the campground is also popular for those that like to explore on foot.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Visiting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a right of passage for nearly every Minnesotan. You dont even have to be an outdoorsy type of person. Its simply something that each person should experience at least once in their lifetime .

The campground is located near the heart of the Itasca State Park and offers a variety of amenities that include running water, boat docks, and state-of-the-art shower houses.

Bear Head Lake State Park Ely

Back in 2010, Bear Head Lake State Park was voted Americas Favorite Park during a Coca-Cola ad campaign, and the parks visitors enthusiastically support this award.
Almost 650 acres in size, this park has everything a camper could want hiking, fishing, a beach, paddle boards and more.
From black bears to eagles to wolves and moose, Bear Head Lake State Park is teeming with wildlife.
Bear Head Lake has walleye, crappie, and bass. The park contains 25 miles of lakeshore .
There are boats for rent, 45 electric camping sites, 5 cabins, and even one 3-bedroom guest house! With cross-country skiing trails, snowmobile routes, and snowshoes for rent, this park is beautiful any time of year.
The best part? Its close proximity to the Boundary Waters. Less experienced campers will feel like super-advanced wilderness explorers, but Bear Head isnt nearly as rugged or challenging as its neighbor to the north.

More Free Rv Camping On Minnesota Public Lands
Dispersed camping is permitted throughout Minnesota’s state forests however, it is rarely RV camping-friendly, as you must use existing sites, you can’t camp in parking lots, and this type of camping typically comes in the form of hiking back into the woods a bit. It is perfect for tent camping.
One exception to this is Cedar Bay Campground in the Cloquet Valley State Forest, where several waterfront sites are provided by the State of Minnesota, free of charge. Toilets, a swimming beach, boat ramp, and great fishing can be had here, but you should bring everything else you needincluding drinking waterand pack it all back out with you again when you leave.
Other free campgrounds come in the form of a county park by the name of Old Crossing Treaty Park, near Red Falls, MN. Between this and the Chippewa National Forest, several casinos offer parking lot camping as well. It’s always a good idea to call ahead when planning on camping in casino lots, as various conditions may apply, and the rules can change at a moment’s notice.

Lake Maria State Park Monticello
Another of the lesser-known Minnesota campgrounds, Lake Maria State Park is not only close to the Twin Cities, but one of the smaller parks in Minnesota.
With only 17 campsites and 3 permanent cabins, this park is intimate and quiet, perfect for a serene Minnesota camping experience.
Theres 14 miles of hiking/skiing trails, 6 miles of horseback trails, rental canoes, and a public boat ramp .
Theres even a pond located in the park that is groomed into a rink in the winter! Visitors can expect to see ponds, wetlands, and old-growth oak forests along the trails.
Keep your eyes peeled for some special wildlife in the area: Lake Maria is home to a group of Blanding turtles, an endangered Minnesota species.

Bear Head Lake State Park

Located less than a half hour east of Saint Paul, Afton State Park is a popular prairie-filled park that attracts campers from the Twin Cities and beyond.
What makes the campgrounds at Afton unique within the Minnesota state park system is that they are only available for those willing to backpack their gear to the sites. The 27 backpack sites at Afton State Park are located less than a mile from the parking lot, and all include a picnic table, fire ring, and plenty of space to pitch a tent or two.The campsites also share access to a communal pit toilet and water spigot.
The backpack sites at Afton vary from shaded to exposed, and all offer views and access to the surrounding wooded and prairie environments. This includes the extensive trail system that winds its way through the park.
No campsite is a direct neighbor to another, offering more privacy than your average campground, but it’s not uncommon to hear the crackle of a nearby campfire throughout the night, reminding you that you’re not completely alone in the woods.
