Free Camping Fully Stocked Campsites And Even A How
New York state will provide free First-Time Camper weekends throughout the summer in 2017.
Families that have never camped before will have the opportunity to learn if they enjoy sleeping under the stars before investing in their own gear by registering for a fully stocked campsite at a select state campground from July 7-Aug. 25.
New campers will be provided with a family tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp chairs, camp stove, lantern, and even firewood. A camping ambassador will meet families at the campsite and help them get set up with a camping 101 lesson, and campers will have an opportunity to learn from experts on how to fish, hike, bird watch, paddle and more.
Reservations are required and will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis starting May 17 by calling 518-474-6718.

One of the best spots for free camping in New York is Rockwood State Forest.
Situated near Rockwood village, the Rockwood State Forest sits on an 856-acre property. Aside from access to the gorgeous Rockwood Lake, the grounds are home to long trails and old logging roads that add a rustic feel to the area.
Well-suited for explorers with a deep respect for nature, the campsite is lush with wildlife and other recreational outdoor activities that you can enjoy, such as hiking, fishing, hunting, and even horseback riding.

Wyoming: Shadow Mountain Bridger
This spot is hardly a secret anymore–it fills up every day all summer long–but if you can snag a spot, you are one happy camper. Located within Bridger-Teton National Forest’s approved dispersed camping areas, Shadow Mountain and Ditch Creek have designated roadside camp spots with stellar views of the Gros Ventre and Teton ranges and are just on the outskirts of Grand Teton National Park. A toilet facility has been installed in the area due to crowds, and there’s talk of this zone becoming a paid campground in the future.

Oklahoma: Black Kettle Campground Black Kettle National Grassland
You’ll find a dozen free campsites, equipped with fire pits and picnic tables, at Black Kettle Campground, part of Black Kettle National Grassland, a 31,000-acre wilderness area on the Great Plains that stretches across western Oklahoma. This spot is about 30 miles north of Interstate 40, near the town of Cheyenne, so you’ll fall asleep to the sound of a hooting owl, versus a grinding freeway. From the campground, you’ll find two short hiking trails and a boat ramp into Dead Warrior Lake, which has three miles of shoreline.
Wellesley Island State Park
The largest camping complex in the Thousand Islands region, Wellesley Island State Park is home to over 400 free camp sites. The island itself is a perfect spot for nature lovers and those who want to relax outdoors.
The camp sites are secluded , with a beautiful sandy beach for all of your sunbathing and swimming needs.

Washington: Quinault Ridge Road Olympic National Forest
You can’t disperse camp within Olympic National Park, but it is allowed in Olympic National Forest, not far from the entrance to the national park. Check out the roadside spots off Quinault Ridge Road, which is Forest Road 2258, just off Highway 101 north of the town of Aberdeen. These spots are scenic and quiet, and a handful can be found within the first mile of the road. If you’re in an extra-large vehicle, you may find turning around challenging, so choose a site wisely or head to another zone, like Forest Road 29, near the town of Forks.
Kentucky: Turkey Foot Campground Daniel Boone National Forest
If you can make it to Turkey Foot Campground, down a long, steep gravel road , then you’ll be rewarded with a slice of Kentucky’s finest wilderness, managed by the Forest Service. Fifteen no-frills dispersed sites are located along War Fork Creek, a good spot for trout fishing. Amenities include tables and fire rings, but be sure to pack out your trash, and know that there’s no water on-site. For hikers, a section of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail passes through camp.

Minnesota: Six Mile Lake Chippewa National Forest
Turns out, the Land of 10,000 Lakes has plenty of lakefront dispersed camping, too. Post up at Six Mile Lake, about seven miles down a Forest Service road from the town of Bena. This is a former established campground within Chippewa National Forest that now has a dozen free dispersed campsites with very limited services. There’s a boat ramp onto Six Mile Lake next to the campground, with good fishing to be had in the lake’s waters. Don’t forget bug spray.
Rules Regulations And Red Tape
Where permitted, backcountry camping is free of charge and does not require a permit. However, camping in a single location for more than three consecutive nights or in a group of 10 or more requires a permit. You can obtain a permit free of charge from any New York State forest ranger or at a local forestry office. Contact information for rangers in various regions is available through the DEC website. Even in areas where backcountry camping is permitted, you may not camp within 150 feet of roads, trails and water sources. Transporting firewood onto state land is prohibited, and fires should only be built in established fire pits.

Tennessee: Paint Creek Corridor Cherokee National Forest
The free dispersed sites outside of the town of Greenville, on the five-mile stretch of Forest Road 41, also known as Paint Creek Road, tend to fill up on busy weekends, so get here early or midweek to snag a coveted spot. This is part of the 650,000-acre Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee’s only national forest, and camping is allowed in designated spots only. Even if you’re not spending the night, this is a scenic road to drive or stop in for a picnic, with views of Kelly and Dudley Falls.
New Mexico: Cebolla Mesa Carson National Forest
A primitive free campground within Carson National Forest about 25 minutes north of Taos, Cebolla Mesa has a handful of campsites literally on the edge of the Rio Grande Gorge. The road in is three miles long and very rough , but once you make it here, you’ll be treated to outstanding views, plus amenities like picnic tables, fire pits, and a pit toilet. There are dispersed camping sites along the road in as well. Don’t miss the hiking trail into the canyon that starts from camp and drops over a mile and nearly a thousand vertical feet to the river.

Top 10 Campgrounds And Rv Parksbuffalo New York

East Otto State Forest Campground

Located near the New York towns of East Otto and Otto, camping is allowed at 14 designated sites along Kriedeman Forest Road that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The sites are marked with a yellow camping disk.
These sites are numbered and have a primitive fire ring. There are no outhouse facilities. Camping for more than three nights or in a group of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.
East Otto State Forest covers 1,354 acres. No formal trails exist, but old ski trails and farm roads provide some opportunities for hiking.
Long Pond State Forest

New York Forest Preserve Lands
The Department of Environmental Conservation permits dispersed, or primitive camping, in the mountainous regions of the Adirondacks and the Catskills . Dispersed camping is permitted on the Forest Preserve land but is not permitted in Wildlife Management Areas.
To take advantage of free camping in NY, youll need to pitch your tent at least 150 feet from any developed areas or bodies of water. In some areas, you will see lean-tos. These are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Similar to the shelters along the hiking trails, lean-tos are expected to be shared with other campers and are not exclusive.

Georgia: Ball Field Dispersed Camping Area Chattahoochee
Lake Conasauga is Georgia’s highest lake, at 3,150 feet elevation, near the summit of Grassy Mountain. It’s an idyllic destination, beloved by bird-watchers, anglers, and hikers. Although there’s a developed campground on the 19-acre lake, a mile away, dispersed camping is allowed on the expansive, grassy Ball Field, named after the stickball played here by Cherokee tribes as a means to resolve conflicts. By day, hike the nearby Emory Creek Falls Trail or the Tearbritches Trail by night, enjoy stargazing from the field.
Utah: Muley Point Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
There may be no more scenic free camping site in the country than Muley Point, an overlook within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area that’s set atop thousand-foot cliffs above the San Juan River Canyon, near the town and rock formation known as Mexican Hat. Park your rig here and you’ll be high above Goosenecks State Park, with views into Monument Valley. You’ll sacrifice privacy for the postcard-worthy vistas, though. To get here, take Utah State Route 261, the Moki Dugway Scenic Backway, and pull off on the dirt Muley Point Road. Tread carefully–don’t park too close to the edge–and watch out for high winds and extreme heat in the summertime.

Alabama: Tuskegee Primitive Camp Tuskegee National Forest
At 11,000 acres, Tuskegee National Forest in south-central Alabama, about 20 minutes from the city of Auburn, is one of the smallest national forests in the U.S., but it’s got plenty of room to explore. The eight-mile Bartram National Recreation Trail passes through here, as does the 3.8-mile Pleasant Hill Trail, with technical terrain for mountain biking. Dispersed camping is allowed, but mind the guidelines, which includes securing a free backcountry permit. A designated 14-site campground known as Tuskegee Primitive Camp offers free camping with no amenities besides a flat, level spot to park.

Free Campsites In Western New York
Summer is here and no summer can be complete with out at least one good camping trip.
You can have an authentic summer get away at only the cost of food and gas to get there if you check out one of these free campsites around Western New York, according to freecampsites.net. This does not include a park entry fee, so there could possibly be a fee to get your car, truck or RV into some of the parks.
1.) Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area
Three miles north of the Village of Warsaw lies the town of Middlebury, home to Carlton Hill Multiple use area. Guests can stay up to three nights without a permit and up to 14 nights with a free permit. Fishing, hunting, trapping, scenic views, bird watching and hiking trails are a few things you can do. 2.) East Otto Forest Campground
It’s about 50 minutes from Buffalo and 20 minutes from Ellicottville where you can stay up to three nights at six to 15 different campsites. This one has more of a rustic charm as your only amenity is a fire ring. There is no water or bathrooms, but that’s what the woods are for bears do it all the time and it is free!
3.) Little Rock City Camp Area
Bike Trails, hiking trails, hunting and rock climbing are a few of the thing to do while you are there. The one to five Campsites come fully loaded with fire ring and picnic table. Located in Salamanca, this is perfect for tent camping, not a lot of space for RV’s or campers.
