3 Camping Cocktails Perfect for Summer

Backpackers definitely need to lighten their load, and while car campers can pretty much pack a full bar, its still best to keep things relatively simple. You probably dont want to deal with 10 different bottles of booze, plus bitters, fat washes, and egg foams at a picnic table . Bring just a few bottles of alcohollike vodka, whiskey or bourbon, and maybe a liqueurthat you can combine in various forms or sip straight. Bring mixers youll enjoy on their own too. Unlike pre-made bottled cocktail mixers, soda, fruit juice, lemonade, V-8, apple cider, and iced tea pull double duty during the day.

The Lazy Bartenders Guide To Easy Mixed Drinks For Camping

The keys to easy mixed drinks for camping are:

  • The fewest mixing items possible.
  • Items that take up the least amount of space.
  • Some of the familiar tastes of home, but a little vacation flavor thrown in.
  • Will hit-the-spot whether you are cold or warm camping.
  • And creates the least number of messy dishes when you are done.
  • So, these mixed drinks are one pot options using only three ingredients that can all be mixed in advance or in one cup. You can drink them hot or cold. You can make them in advance if you want, but then you lose a little of the camping spirit if you dont create the drinks onsite.

Tip: Choose your mixed drinks so they will fit your mood when you arrive at your campgrounds. To save space, bring individual serving sizes of the alcohol and mixers. If you want any of the drinks warmed, bring along a pan and items to build a fire or heat liquid, and if you want iced, have your ice chest full and handy.

Why Do You Feel Warm When You Drink Alcohol

Before we get into fun recipes for hot cocktails at your campsite, lets touch on the science of alcohol and warmth. Many who drink alcohol might comment on feeling warmsocially, this is also known as the beer blanket. But while you might feel warm and cozyalcohol actually lowers your bodys temperature.

Your bodys temperature is controlled by your organs primarily the brain, heart, and liver. Exercise and digestion produce even more heat, and when you drink alcohol, your liver is working overtime. When your liver metabolizes a lot of alcohol, your blood supply goes to your liver which releases more heat. However, during this process, your core temperature goes down as you sweat, though many do not notice.

While drinking hot cocktailsor any kind of cocktailsis fun, its important to stay hydrated and safe. If someone does have one cocktail too many, be sure that they keep their jackets on when the weather is cold. Though they might feel hot, their temperature might actually be lower than normal, and they could be at risk for hypothermia.

Stay safe, hydrated, and enjoy these hot cocktails responsibly at your next fall or winter camping trip.

Campfire Cocktails: Recipes To Warm You Up This Winter

The winter of 2020/21 saw the dawn of outdoor socialising in all conditions. Thanks to COVID restrictions, many of us have been limited to only hanging out in small groups outside. As a result, Ive never had so many magical winter nights around the campfire. And of course, a campfire just aint complete with an array of campfire cocktails!

For a while, a few of us enjoyed trying out some new campfire cocktails at our local Dune Bar sat on camp chairs and snuggled into a cosy nook in the sand dunes, blankets and all! Weve taken our portable fire pits to secluded spots on the cliffs to enjoy sunset cocktails. And of course, many Saturday afternoons have turned into evenings warming our toes next to our patio fire pit.

A Few Final Reminders About Alcohol In The Backcountry

    • Drink lots of water! Regardless of how much you drink, dehydration is always a concern. Be careful to drink enough water while you hike – especially if youre consuming alcohol.
    • Alcohol and altitude dont mix. Consuming alcohol can inhibit your ability to adapt to elevation changes.
    • Dont drink and hike. Wait until you get to camp before partaking. On the trail, you need to be alert and aware in order to avoid dangerous situations.
    • Dont store alcohol in your tent . Regardless of whether your beer is in cans or your whisky is in a flask – store it with your food in a barrel or food hang in order to prevent bears/wildlife at your campsite.
    • Leave no trace! Pack out whatever you bring in – flatten beer cans or rinse out disposable flasks and carry them back to civilizations. Always leave the trail and your campsite better than you found it!

Turn your phone sideways for a much better table display!
