Colorado Dispersed Camping Rules And Regulations
As mentioned above, its extremely important to respect our public lands.
Although national forests and BLM land have slightly different dispersed camping rules, one important rule pertains to both always follow the Leave No Trace principles.
These basically boil down to disturbing the land as little as possible. Leave your campsite even cleaner than when you found it. Properly dispose of human waste . Avoid off-limits or environmentally-sensitive areas.
Like much of the American West, wildfire season in Colorado is brutal. Always check on current fire restrictions and please be very careful with campfires almost 85% of wildfires are started by humans.
Finally, respect all dispersed camping stay limits. In most national forests and BLM land, this is limited to 14 or 16 days in the same location .

Rock climbers in Colorado are no strangers to the region of Pike National Forest known as the South Platte. Popular crags such as Turkey Rocks, Sheep Nose, and Thunder Butte are within an hours drive from Denver or Colorado Springs.
Its easy access also makes it a go-to spot for locals looking for last-minute free campgrounds in Colorado. Its great if youre a late camper, but it does mean that it can get crowded the easy access is both a blessing and a curse. Youll have the best luck finding privacy if you visit during the week or on non-peak-travel weekends.
From Highway 67/Rampart Range Road you can access Turkey Rocks, and other OHV trailhead areas where you can camp to avoid the crowds on the main road. Some roads are rougher than others, but any vehicle with decent clearance will be able to travel them.

How To Find Dispersed Camping Locations
There are a lot of good places online to find dispersed camping spots. First, check the National Forest Websites for recommendations. You can pick a forest page using this interactive map, or chooses a specific forest below to see their Dispersed Camping information.
There are many other good online sources. Pick a National Forest near you or a 14er you want to climb and search online for dispersed camping locations. Youll find numerous reports and blogs with ideas to get started with.
Motor Vehicle Use Maps
These are large PDFs made available from the Forest Service.
Many, but not all, of these maps show where dispersed camping is permitted. Roads with dots on either side represent free campsites. Each map has a legend.
Its best to download them for an easier time viewing, and so you have them with you if bring a computer on the road. I havent tried viewing them on a cell phone, but they are very large and it would be a headache.
To Print Open the map and find the area you need to print. Go to File, Print, and under Pages to Print, select More Options and Current view. Next under Page Sizing & Handling choose Fit. Select Orientation and then Print.
Tip Bring up the location in Google Maps too, so you can get more street names and info.

Camping Near Green Mountain Falls
The alpine community of Green Mountain Falls lies nestled in a narrow valley at 7,800 feet off of Ute Pass. Youll barely know its down there until you get off the exit and go driving thru. Grab a bite to eat at the couple of restaurants in town and then relax by Green Mountain Falls Pond. Its a beautiful lake and community to stroll around, and makes a great basecamp. Theres one private campground in town, best suited for RVs with full hookups.

But smartphones and the internet have become a major part of our world. We use them for communication with others , for directions and maps, for knowledge and research, for documenting and even for things like clocks and flashlights.
Unfortunately, given the remote nature of many free camping areas, cell phone service and cell data are almost non-existent. While the good news is that you will have no choice but to commune with friends, family and nature, the flipside is you need to be more prepared.
Bring maps. Lots of maps. You can get them online , you can get them from local rest areas and welcome centers, and from the rangers office.
Either write down or print out your research on the local area, especially phone numbers for the rangers and local authorities.
Bring a wireless power station and keep it charged. Cell phones tend to run low on battery when they are constantly trying to connect to the nearest cell tower. If you know that the area has poor service, you can either turn your phone off or put it on airplane mode to save the battery until you need it.

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains and is most famous for the 40-acre grove of towering old-growth redwood trees.
