Located on Colorados far western slope, Mesa County is home to the largest city west of the continental divide in the state, Grand Junction . There are campgrounds at two state parks, a national monument, BLM land, private RV parks, and various others.

Although its not directly in the midst of the woods or tallest peaks, youll find easy to access to both the Uncompahgre and Grand Mesa national forests. They each provide seemingly endless acres of alpine activities, from mesmerizing hikes and off-road driving, to additional camping a bit further from civilization. However, youll still find plenty of outdoor recreation and campgrounds closer to town.

The James M. Robb Colorado River State Park is a unique park located along the Colorado River. Split into 5 sections, each with its own designated recreation and activities, this park features two campgrounds on both the east and western sides of Grand Junction. The Colorado National Monument is a cant miss bucket list attraction sandwiched between Grand Junction and Fruita. It has a cool campground too, located high over the Grand Valley floor.

Camping Near Grand Junction

With an estimated population of around 65,000 residents, Grand Junction provides all the shops, restaurants and attractions to keep you entertained and well fed during your Western Colorado camping trip. The downtown features several blocks of businesses, perfect for strolling and enjoying the warmer days at 4,586 feet. Turn right onto Main St, then make a left onto E 3rd St. The road will become N River Rd and after about a mile, the RV park will be on your left.

Great helpful camp hosts. We had one of only a few walk in camp spots. Which were very nice, spacious, shady with grass. Everything was in good condition, bathrooms, laundry, shower was okay. Fairly small area and lake. Great biking/hiking trails. Loads of day use area and shelters with picnic tables all around the lake. Even permanent hunting blinds for waterfowl. State And Federal Campgrounds

Visitors to Colorado National Monument bordering Grand Junction can camp among red-rock canyons and mesas. The 32-square-mile park includes Saddlehorn, a rustic area with 80 sites for tents or RVs. Some of the sites are pull-through, but there are no showers or electric hookups. Sites do include grills and picnic tables. At James M. Robb–Colorado River State Park there are two campgrounds: Fruita Section and Island Acres. Both have sites with either full hookups or electric hookups, laundry areas and dump stations.

Palisade Plunge Trail

The “Plunge” begins on top of the Grand Mesa, at almost 11,000 feet elevation, and traverses 32 miles through diverse terrain with a 6,000 foot decent to the Town of Palisade. Phase one, begins on Lands End Road, approximately three miles below the Lands End Observatory and traverses over 17 miles to Hwy. 6 and the Palisade Rim Trailhead. This section of the Palisade Plunge navigates remote, backcountry terrain with some sections of extreme exposure recommended only for experienced riders.

This is one of the newest and prettiest campgrounds in the Grand Junction Area. Its located just outside of Fruita, and has facilities, and is located next to the Colorado River.
