Unicoi State Park & Lodge
Once known as “Unicoi Outdoor Recreation Experiment Station,” Unicoi State Park & Lodge has some of the most interesting accommodations of any other park in the state. Seen nowhere else in the country, a cluster of rustic, barrel-shaped cabins offer all the amenities with dreamy beds, full kitchens, televisions, heating and air, and balconies overlooking the forest. The park is also home to the, “Squirrel’s Nest,” a collection of hillside shelters perfect for backpackers and camping groups.
Jacks River Fields Campground
Located on the south fork of Jacks River in the Cohutta Wilderness, youll find 7 secluded campsites at Jacks River Fields campground.Camping fees are $5 per site per night. While some of the more popular trails in this area contain creek crossings like the Jacks River Trail and Bear Creek Trail, youll find other popular trails. The Conasauga Recreational Area is 13 miles from the campgrounds. Hike around the lake and on the Grassy Mountain Tower Trail, where youll find spectacular views of the Cohuttas from above. There is camping available at Conasauga, but the season is from April 10 to October 31.
Pros And Cons Of Dispersed Camping
When youre dispersed camping, you must be well-practiced in Leave No Trace Principles. For the most part, it will just be you, your tent and the landno bathrooms, no showers, no trash cans. Pack out what you brought in, and pick up any additional trash you find for extra credit.
You also have to accept more risks. While there may be USFS Rangers in the area, outside of a designated campground you lose the safety in numbers factor, especially with regards to the elements and wildlife. If youre camping in bear country, bring your own bear canister and spray. If youre in the desert, bring extra water and appropriate shade. If theres a fire ban, its your responsibility to know about it before you go and to obey it at all times.
That being said, there are lots of benefits to camping on public lands. For one, its free! Theres also a good chance you and your crew will be the only ones out thereyoull have lots more privacy than in a developed campground, and a lot more freedom.
: But with that freedom, comes responsibility.

Wildlife Management Area Camping In Georgia
Many of Georgias wildlife management areas allow free primitive camping. Check with the individual area before you set out to make sure camping is permitted. Campsites in wildlife management areas are favorites with hunters during hunting season, and some trails and activities may be off-limits at certain times of the day to lessen the danger to non-hunters. In addition to deer, turkey and feral hog hunting, Flint River WMA south of Macon has hiking trails, fishing spots and geocaches. Nearby, Hannahatchee Creek WMA offers primitive camping, hiking, geocaching and hunting. Pack your canoe or kayak for a stay at Lake Russell WMA in Cornelia or Mayhaw WMA in Colquitt.
Lake Sinclair Recreational Area
The most commercialized of all these, it really isnt primitive but I figured I would add one almost mainstream site. Consisting of 44 campsites in four loops. Loop B has ten tent sites, and loop D has 18 tent sites. Hot showers, two boat docks, swimming beach, boat ramp, playground.
Ten camping sites along a fresh mountain stream and a peaceful atmosphere that is only 15 minutes from the famous alpine village of Helen, Georgia. This site also has restrooms!

Raven Cliff Falls Wilderness Area
Whether you want to hike several miles to a primitive campsite or you prefer to be less than a mile away while still feeling detached, Raven Cliffs Wilderness Area offers plenty of campsites along Dodd Creek north of Atlanta near Cleveland, GA. You can hike the 3.3 miles to Raven Cliffs Falls where youll see the two 400-foot falls cascading from the cliff. There are three campsites that are a short distance from the parking lot, or three primitive campgrounds along the hike. The sites are first-come, first serve. The ambient bubbling of the creek is a natural sound machine that will lull you to sleep.

Why Youll Love It: If you want to camp near water falls, Dicks Creek will deliver! Heres the catch this primitive, free campsite can only be accessed by 4×4 vehicles. Some folks have done it with sedans, but its not recommended.
RVs, youre out of luck.
Caveman on Campendium says, Can be busy during the summer months. locals like the area to swim in the falls. we did. Quiet and peaceful at night. campsites are spread out so you have privacy. No restrooms or showers. the woods and River is your only reprieve.

One of the neatest things about Georgia State Parks, is the very unique sleeping accommodations they offer. Whether youre an experienced camper who wants to try something new, or an adventurer looking for that next exciting experience, Georgia State Parks have something youll love.
Yurts
Yurts are hands-down the coolest things. With wood floors, and canvas walls and ceilings, yurts bring camping to a whole other level. Theyre heated, and youre well-protected from the elements, but you still get that camping feel. Each yurt comes with futons and bunk beds , and they have decks, a fire ring, and a picnic table. The bathhouses are within walking distance. And the inside is so spacious! You can really spread out in there. All you need to bring are your sleeping bags/linens and your food, and youre good to go!
Yurts are currently located at Cloudland Canyon State Park, High Falls State Park , Red Top Mountain State Park, Fort Yargo State Park, Tugaloo State Park, and Sweetwater Creek State Park.
We stayed in the yurts at Fort Yargo, and it was truly the coolest experience for the kids! They were able to go fishing right off our back deck, and the whole thing was just neat! Such a great way to experience a state park in a new way. The kids still talk about it, and we cant wait to do it again. And we’ve just learned the yurts at Fort Yargo now have heaters! So don’t let cool weather deter you.

Camp In North Georgias Chattahoochee Forest At These Fantastic Free Car Camping Sites Near Unicoi Gap And Chattahoochee Gap Just North Of The Town Of Helen
The Chattahoochee National Forest covers 750,000 acres of rolling forested land in North Georgia home to some of our favorite hiking, backpacking, and camping areas. Weve found some of our favorite campsites in Georgia along the graveled Forest Road 44, just north of Helen. Simple, primitive, yet beautiful, these primitive campsites feature only a stone fire ring and graveled turnoffs for parking.
What these campsites lack in comfort features, they more than make up for in privacy and beauty: the sites are amply spaced from each other, and theyre nestled in mossy, scenic, shady swaths of hardwood forest laced with small streams, wildflowers, and wildlife. And, unlike the crowded nearby sites at the Upper Chattahoochee Campground, these sites are free. The sites are available first come, first camp so arrive early on weekends when the weather forecast is looking bright, and make backup plans in the event theyre all taken.

Treetop Bivouac Camping Panola Mountain State Park
The adventurous camper can sleep like a log with Panola Mountain State Parks treetop bivouac camping program, called ZZZs in the Trees. Secured by harnesses for the night, campers can safely scale the majestic trees in the park to get to their quarters: canvas treeboats suspended high above the ground. The treeboats are open, not enclosed like a tent, and sway gently in the breeze, providing a relaxing canopy getaway for those comfortable with heights. Reservations for the treetop camping are required and can be made by calling the state park.
Paddle-In Camping Reed Bingham and High Falls State Park
Reed Bingham State Park, 20 minutes east of Moultrie offers paddle-in camping on Eagle Island for up to 30 campers. Eagle Island sits in the middle of the parks 375-acre lake, popular with boaters, fishermen and skiers, and provides privacy from passing boaters. The island is only a 15-minute paddle from the shore, and campers may rent canoes or kayaks or bring their own.
High Falls State Park in Jackson provides paddle-in camping to a secluded peninsula. The paddle-in takes about 30 minutes. The campsite can sleep up to 25 people and comes with five canoes.

Fire Safety And Flat Footing
Set your fire away from nearby combustibles and ensure you have adequate overhead clearance. Firewood should always be sourced locally if you need to collect wood from the local area, always choose wood that is already on the ground.
Never break branches from standing trees, live or dead. Always ensure your fire is dead out and cold to the touch before you disperse the ashes around the campsite.
Alternatively, bring a camp stove.
Find a flat, level area to set up your site. Never alter the area by digging drainage ditches this is why its so important to find an established and trusted campsite to minimize your impact on the ecosystem.
Free Camping In Georgia
In our opinion, theres nothing better than free camping. Its your chance to get back to basics, enjoy nature, and separate yourself from the hustle and bustle of 21st century life. It also allows you to experience some of natures best views for free.
The fantastic thing about Georgia is that free camping here is legal, as long as you are camping on state ground and adhere to a few simple guidelines .
Land looked after by the Bureau for Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Wildlife Management Areas will be state owned. Typically any areas that are green on Google Maps are also publicly owned.
A great state map, such as this one, could help in finding free camping spots too. Just be aware that sometimes signs exist on publicly owned land stating camping is not allowed in certain areas, usually to protect flora and fauna. .
Yet with 67% of the state covered in forest, you should be spoiled for choice when it comes to camping in Georgia.
In order to minimize the impact on the environment many of the state parks and areas have their own campgrounds, in the hope of encouraging campers to pitch their tent there.

Make Memories At The Coast
While there are no sites for free tent camping in Georgia on the coast, you could plan to park your RV somewhere and experience the shore using public beach access.
Some boondockers have been able to set anchor in the parking lots of Walmart and Cracker Barrel. Before staying overnight at a store, ask the store manager or security for permission and remember to be a gracious guest by supporting the store and making a purchase.
Start your coastal experience in Savannah, Georgia, home to a rich cultural history. Another option is Jekyll Island. This spot is a favorite of anglers because of its salt-water fishing opportunities.
Army Corps Of Engineers
The Army Corps of Engineers are responsible for building dams and controlling rivers among other things. As part of this public service, they also offer free camping at many of their locations. You can check out the regions and areas for free camping here. These campsites range from primitive to established with picnic tables, restrooms and even showers. They are generally well maintained and a great place to stay on your road trip.

Deep Hole Recreation Area
Close to both hiking and paddling, the Deep Hole Recreation Area is just north of Suches in Blue Ridge. The recreation area sits on the banks of the Toccoa River and is the start of the 13.8-mile Toccoa River canoe trail. Camping fees are $10 for waterfront and $12 for non-waterfront sites. Paddling the Toccoa in fall is beautiful, as youll wind through cool mountain waters with mountains rising around you. Most of the rapids are only Class I with a few very doable Class II. If paddling isnt your forte, the Benton-MacKaye Trail is only 3 miles from Deep Hole, where you can access the Highway 60 trailhead. Hike north toward Skeenah Gap for a 5.4 mile hike, or south to the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge for a shorter 3.6-mile hike.
Sweetwater Creek State Park
Perfect for quick and easy nature getaways, Sweetwater Creek State Park accommodates overnight guests with rustic yurts. Glamping in the yurt village offers cozy beds, shared restrooms, picnic areas and a playground on George Sparks Reservoir. A bait shop supplies fishing needs, as well as rentals for kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding. The parks hiking trails explore miles of natural wonders and historic ruins along the banks of Sweetwater Creek.
