What Is Blm Camping

Tacoma Recovery | Yellow Post Winter Camping at San Bernardino National Forest

The Bureau protects undeveloped public lands. Some BLM areas offer dispersed BLM camping in California at little to no cost. Youre typically allowed to stay up to 14 nights on BLM land, and some locations require a permit. Signs will be posted if a permit is required.

Also, its always a good idea to thoroughly read any signage in case of special rules and regulations for the area. In addition, there may be BLM lands that offer some amenities for campers, but mostly, youll find boondocking options only.

Primitive Campgrounds In Southern California

If getting away from people is high on your priority list, and you could take or leave all the fancy amenities listed above, look no further than this round-up of our favorite backcountry and primitive campgrounds in Southern California.

As these sites are relatively unsupervised and do not have a camp host, we highly recommend you grab a fire permit, double check fire warnings, and read through camp restrictions before heading out to a remote area. Make sure you pack in plenty of water and pack out all trash when you leave. Lastly, it is crucial to follow the seven Leave No Trace principles whenever you venture outdoors.

Some sites listed below are first-come, first-served car campgrounds in far-flung locales, some are dispersed camping areas, and some are worthy hike-in campgrounds along our favorite trails. Whichever one you pick, its sure to be a winner.

Anza Borrego Desert State Park

Roadside dispersed camping is allowed in most areas, subject to the following rules:

  • No camping more than one full car length from any paved or dirt roads
  • No camping within 100 feet of any natural water source
  • Garbage collection is not available except at developed campgrounds and the visitors center
  • Metal containers must be used for all campfires

Dogs are not allowed on hiking trails or cross-country. However, dogs are allowed on a leash within campgrounds and on the more than 500 miles of dirt roads within the park. Dogs or cats must sleep in a tent or vehicle at night. The desert can be a challenging place for dogs, and there are many hazards present. Dogs can also put pressure on native wildlife, and for that reason, cannot be left unattended at any time. Firearms and fireworks are not allowed anywhere in the park. The operation of powered unmanned aircraft, including drones, is prohibited.

  • Oriflamme Canyon
  • Blair Valley
  • Culp Valley

There are also nine designated primitive campgrounds in Anza Borrego:

Alabama Hills Recreation Area In Lone Pine

About: BLM camping in California allows for some breathtaking views. Alabama Hills Recreation Area is no exception. Its surrounded by mountains and is near Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park. The spot has a view of Mt. Whitney.

While the west side of the recreation area is only for day use, there are still plenty of overnight boondocking options. Be sure to find a campsite here during daylight hours as the roads can be dangerous, and youll need a clear view.

Coordinates:37.4288, -118.4251

About:Volcanic Tablelands is just north of Death Valley National Park. It offers spots for any size rig. However, the road is a little bumpy, so we recommend scouting the area first if you have a low clearance RV.

Joshua Tree Dispersed Camping

Why you should camp here: Enjoy a cozy campfire under a massive canopy of stars at these free, BLM camping areas near Joshua Tree National Park.

  • Reservations accepted: No
  • Best season: Winter, spring, fall
  • Campsite type: Tents, RVs
  • RV hookups: No

The National Parks have often been called Americas Best Idea, but camping inside of one can be an expensive affair. Luckily, many of the countrys desert parks are surrounded by public land with designated camping areas for travelers on a budget.

Joshua Tree has two such spots in its vicinity: one near the west entrance and one near the southern entrance.

The legal dispersed camping area near the west entrance station is located off Sunfair Road and is little more than a dry lake bed. Sites are full of sunshine and offer the occasional makeshift fire ring but lacking in the privacy department.

On the parks south side, theres a large designated camping area just five minutes from the entrance, and many sites are bordered by mesquite trees and berms of dirt. You wont find any bathrooms or amenities here, so packing in your water and packing out your toilet paper are musts.

What About Cell Coverage And Wifi

Dont expect coverage anywhere in the National Parks or surrounding National Forest. Supposedly, Verizon has reasonable coverage along Big Meadow Road, but I ran into one person who was not finding this to be true. I have ATT and had one momentary blip of coverage when my phone blasted in about 20 texts, and then the signal disappeared.

If you have to connect, head over to one of the parks ranger stations for your best shot at wifi. Youll see a mass of people set up all around furiously tapping at their devices.

I also found good free wifi at Stony Creek Village . Stony Creek is about 20 minutes or less from the dispersed camping area . From here, I was able to Zoom into one of my bookclubs with no connectivity issues.
