Bald Eagle State Park is a 5,900-acre Pennsylvania state park in Howard, Liberty, and townships in Centre County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park includes the Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir, formed by damming Bald Eagle Creek and other smaller streams and covering 1,730 acres . Bald Eagle State Park is at the meeting point of two distinct geologic features. The Allegheny Plateau is to the north and the Ridge and Valley area of Pennsylvania is to the south. The park is in the Bald Eagle Valley off Pennsylvania Route 150 in Howard, between Milesburg and Lock Haven.

Some of the most picturesque areas along North Florida’s Gulf Coast are found within the park, which supports over 4,000 upland acres.

Located on Alligator Point where Ochlockonee Bay meets Apalachee Bay, Bald Point State Park offers a multitude of opportunities for land and water activities. Coastal marshes, pine flatwoods and oak thickets foster a diversity of biological communities that make the park a popular destination for birding and wildlife viewing.

Each fall, bald eagles and other migrating raptors along with monarch butterflies are commonly seen heading south for the winter.

Bald Point offers access to two Apalachee Bay beaches for swimming, sunbathing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing. Facilities include a fishing dock and picnic pavilions.

Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir

Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir is a 1,730-acre reservoir that was built in 1971 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of a flood control project on the Susquehanna River basin. The lake was created by damming Bald Eagle Creek. It stretches upstream for 8 miles and has 23 miles of shoreline. The park is at an elevation of 958 feet .

For travelers looking to car camp, it has over 60 remote campsites available for free that you can set up as base camp or just for a night. There are also four State Parks to choose from with a variety of camping amenities and recreational options. Bald Eagle State Forest has some of the best fly fishing streams found along remote dirt roads in Pennsylvania. If you’re new to overlanding, car camping, bike packing or backpacking this is an area you can test out your kit without being too far from civilization. In fact, if you forgot anything, you can drive to a grocery store, hardware store or microbrewery in less than 90 minutes. How bad can it get?

This blog is a day trip, but can be combined with two other trips for a multiple day adventure. Between the three trips you will explore the majority of the forest, but plenty of roads remain untraveled waiting for you to come back an explore on your own. This is an overland route which means a 4wd or high clearance vehicle is recommended. However, you can follow along and choose dirt and gravel forest roads and avoid the 4wd roads if you want to explore in a car.

Russell P Letterman Campground

Named for the former state representative, the Russell P. Letterman Campground is a modern camping facility open from the second Friday in April to mid-December, with accommodations ranging from non-electric sites to cottages and yurts. Arranged in two paved road loops, all accommodations have access to shared restroom facilities with flush toilets and heated showers. Many sites are also handicap accessible.

The non-electric, electric and full-hookup sites are what you might expect at any modern campground: a space to park, a place to set up a tent or auxiliary hang-out spot, fire ring and picnic table, all within a reasonable walk from facilities. Ranging from $26-44 per night, the difference betweens these sites is water and electric connectivity, and depending upon what sort of rig/setup you have, may determine which you choose.

No tent or camper? No problem. Get into one of the campgrounds three electrically lit and heated cottages to sleep soundly on a double bed surrounded by four sturdy walls. In addition, cottages also have porches, dining tables, chairs and electrical outlets all for $50 per night. One additional Deluxe Cottage is available for $87 and, in addition to the amenities of the regular cottages above, offers guests a microwave, stovetop and refrigerator.

The state park has both a modern and primitive campground which can accommodate tents and camping vehicles. The Russell P. Letterman Campground features 99 campsites, 72 of which have 30 amp electrical hookups and 12 of which have 50 amp hookups. The primitive camping area has 35 sites reserved for camping vehicles. The campgrounds open the second Friday of April and close in mid-December.

Inside Bald Eagle State Park

At Bald Eagle State Park, theres something for every type of visitor whether its swimming, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, boating, or exploring the parks 11 miles of hiking trails.

Swimming : Theres a 1,200-foot long sand and turf beach within the state park, which also has a children’s playground, a snack bar, changing rooms, public restrooms, and parking. The beach can be accessed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day, unless otherwise posted.

Fishing : Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir is a warm water fishery and fishing is permitted from the shore, on boats and from an ADA accessible pier located at the main boat launch in the central park area. Visitors can expect to catch a variety of species, most commonly largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, yellow perch, and channel catfish.

Hunting : Hunting is permitted on over 4,900 acres of Bald Eagle State Park, however, hunters are expected to follow the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Hunting groundhogs is prohibited, but game species such as squirrels, turkey, rabbits, pheasant, and white-tailed deer may be hunted.

Cross-Country Skiing : In winter, the numerous hiking trails within the state park also become the ideal runs for cross-country skiing. Skiers must be aware that some of the trails pass through areas open to hunting and therefore must follow regulations.
