Death Valley National Park

The morbidly-named Death Valley National Park actually holds a great diversity of life. In this land of extremes, winter snow tops the towering peaks, while a rare rainstorm might bring vast fields of wildflowers. With portions in California as well as Nevada, Death Valley is one of the most exciting contenders for the best camping in Southern Californa.

In summer, Death Valley is the hottest place on earth. Temperatures often exceed 120 degrees, but that doesnt mean you should discount it as a camping destination. Wake up early and unzip your tent to the color-changing sunrise, painting the Panamint Range across the valley pink and purple. Hiking enthusiasts will love the 1.5-mile trail which goes around the rim of a volcano the 600-foot-deep abyss of Ubehebe Crater.

Busy over the summer, Furnace Creek Campground is our recommendation. Reservations can be made from October to April, but in the peak season, its first come, first served. 136 sites, 18 of which are equipped with RV hookups, offer potable water, picnic tables, and fire pits. Flush toilets and a dump station are also close by, as well as a visitor center, bike path and plenty of hiking trails. Located on the bottom of the valley floor, at Furnace Creek you can enjoy a wide view of the mountains from east to west, which can be observed glowing with breathtaking colors during sunrise and sunset.

Manzanita Campground Angeles National Forest

Big Bear Lake, California || Trout Fishing and Camping || 2021

Looking for a mountain view as you enjoy the great outdoors? Manzanita Campground located in the Los Angeles National Forest provides ample space for each campsite while also giving you the calming view of the mountains.

Located at 5,300 ft elevation this campsite provides two loops of campgrounds, Little Pines and Manzanita.

Each loop offers 40+ campsites so if you are going on a busy weekend and are concerned about finding space this is your best chance.

Campsite reservations are on a first come first serve basis. The wildlife is very active in this part of Southern California, so please be sure to place food in proper receptacles.

Manzanita Campground is great for first-time campers. You will be surrounded by other campers in case of an emergency. Plus it only costs $12/night.

During my first-time tent camping in Southern California, we could not set up a tent. Someone from a nearby tent graciously offered to help us put the tent up.

It is a bit crowded. Once you have some more experience camping, it may be better to head to a more secluded campground. One with more privacy.

Inyo National Forest Dispersed Camping

Image from The Dyrt camper Daniel S.

According to the USFS, most of the land in Inyo County is publicly owned, so anywhere you can find to park and camp for the night is fair game. While the Forest Service recommends purchasing a map to distinguish public land from private, you can find somewhere to camp with enough space to hang up a hammock and enjoy the surrounding flora and fauna.

At Inyo, campers can remain for 28 days per every six months in each of the four ranger districts and campsites can be found along the road in compacted pull-outs, many of which have established primitive fire rings. If you do decide to have a fire, always check with the ranger station to understand the fire danger levels.

Don’t Miss: Can You Bring A Gun Camping In California

Lake Hemet Tent Camping Southern California Campground

Lake Hemet Campground is a bit different than the other campgrounds in Sothern California. This is not a campground that will guarantee any degree of quiet.

You trade the quiet for a long list of possible activities.

The campground offers lakeside tent camping which offers a view like no other. You can wake up to the beautiful view of Lake Hemet.

This location is known for families with young kids. This may be a pro or con depending on your situation. If you are going with your kids, bring a friend who has kids. It would be a good opportunity to give your kid other kids to play with. If you are going with a small intimate group looking for a quiet camping experience, Lake Hemet is not for you.

Like the observatory campground, you can make reservations online.

With a water park near by, you can never expect a dull moment at Lake Hemet Campground. Just take a minute to look at the beauty of this place.

Observatory Tent Camping Palomar Mountains

There is a reason this campground is called the observatory campground. You get unbelievable, unobstructed views of the skies.

Because the nearest major city is not for many miles, you have very little light pollution to ruin your view of the great stars.

For those with an even greater scientific curiosity, there is an observatory that provides an abundance of interesting information about the skies.

This is a good opportunity to get children interested in science or to just brush up on your astronomy.

The campsite is notoriously larger than surrounding campgrounds which makes the observatory campground great for large groups and families.

My favorite thing about this campground is that you can make reservations online. No need to go and pray for an available campsite. Campsite rates average between $15-$20 with some as much as $30. Very affordable but a bit more expensive than most campgrounds.

Overall Observatory Campground is perfect if youre looking for those quiet nights starting at the stars.
