Same-day cancellation for one-night reservations will result in no refunds.
If you won’t arrive to the park in time before the park gates close, please call the park or ReserveAmerica at 1-877-722-6762 by 3 p.m. the following day to inform them of your arrival time. If you do not call, the reservation will be considered a “no-show,” and the site will be made available to other campers.
No refunds are issued for “no-shows,” early departures, or cancellations after the arrival date.

This enjoyable NC tubing trip takes roughly 2 hours, and trips begin by late May. Advance reservations are required.
Though its not very near a large town or city, Loafers Glory is conveniently located near great Blue Ridge adventures like Grandfather Mountain State Park, Mount Mitchell State Park, and Emerald Village in Little Switzerland.
Depending on your itinerary, this could be considered either Banner Elk tubing or Asheville tubing, and there are a lot more outdoor adventures to be had in between these two great mountain towns.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of 14 national park sites in North Carolina and is actually the most visited National Park in the United States .
Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors including hiking, scenic drives, wildlife viewing, fly fishing, horseback riding, historical sites, and of course, tent camping!
There are three established campgrounds in the North Carolina side of the National Park where you can pitch your tent.
Balsam Mountain Campground offers 42 tent only sites during its camping season, which runs from May through October. Reservations are required and the cost is $17.50 a night for you to set up camp in one of the parks more remote campgrounds, which gives you easy access to the Smokies picturesque mountain ranges and other recreational activities.
Cataloochee Campground is home to 27 tent sites in the historic Cataloochee Valley . The campground is open April through the end of October and offers a traditional, established campground experience for $25 a night for a site.
Chimney Rock North Carolina
Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground
With scenic views of Hickory Nut Falls and less than a mile to the entrance of Chimney Rock State Park, campers at Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground can enjoy a peaceful retreat next to the calming sounds of the Rocky Broad River. Tent sites are available along the river or in wooded areas, and covered deck sites are offered for tents, RVs or pop-ups. For those that prefer a few more creature comforts, theres even cabins and tiny house cabins for rent. Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground is pet friendly, is open April through November, and is located only 5 minutes from Chimney Rock State Park so the possibilities for nature-filled family fun are truly endless.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore
While we usually stay in a beach house during our familys annual trip to the Outer Banks, we have camped at the OBX several times and the experience is unparalleledcamping on a barrier island gives you a special look and connection to the beauty and nature of the seashore.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four established campgrounds within the park that are managed by the National Park Service spanning from Nags Head to Ocracoke Island:
- Oregon Inlet Campground is located in Nags Head. It has 107 campsites and is open all year round.
- Cape Point Campground is located in Buxton . It has 202 sites and is open from April through November.
- Frisco Campground is located in Frisco. It has 127 sites and is open from April through November.
- Ocracoke Campground is located on Ocracoke Island, which is only accessible by a vehicle ferry that leaves from Hatteras Island or Cedar Island. It has 136 sites and is open all year round.
All of the campgrounds have tent, trailer and RV sites and can take reservations in advance. Cost per night ranges from $20-$30 dollars depending on the campground. While the campgrounds are not located on the beach, all are a short walk to the Atlantic Ocean.
National Forests In North Carolina
One of the biggest draws for free camping in North Carolina is the abundance of national forest land. Dispersed camping is available within designated sites. These areas are primitive in nature without bathrooms, showers, electricity, or the amenities you will find at developed campgrounds.
There are four National Forests in North Carolina, with hundreds of thousands of acres to explore and enjoy. Each has designated areas where campers can take advantage of dispersed camping.
- Pisgah National Forest. This beautiful forest is filled with high peaks, waterfalls, and over 500,000 acres to explore. Choose from locations within the Appalachian Ranger District, Grandfather Ranger District, and the Pisgah Ranger District to enjoy free camping in North Carolina.
- Croatan National Forest. This national forest is a popular location for visitors as it is the only true coastal forest on the east coast. Its bordered on three sides by water and the area includes both bogs and saltwater estuaries for campers to explore.
- Nantahala National Forest. With over 530,000 acres of forest land, this is the largest forest in NC. There are plenty of spots for free camping here within the Cheoah Ranger District, Nantahala Ranger District, and the Tusquitee Ranger District.
- Uwharrie National Forest. Primitive camping is available within this national forest. Be sure to pay attention to posted signs that indicate if camping is not allowed in the area.

Set in a narrow valley in the middle of the Pisgah National Forest, Mountain Stream RV Park is a quaint family campground surrounded by beautiful mountains from all sides. With a creek running through it, its a perfect spot for couples or a relaxing family vacation.
It offers RV sites with water, electricity, and sewerage hookups. There are also a couple of yurts. Modern restrooms, flush toilets, and cable TV are available, too.
Let your kids play at the playground and pets goof around in the dog park while you relax. You can also fish for trout. However, note that only catch and release fishing is allowed. Area attractions include Crabtree Falls, Linville Caverns, and Blue Ridge Parkway.
Merchants Millpond State Park
Yet another state park campgroundin North Carolina, the campsites at Merchants Millpond State Park are sereneand inviting.
The area surrounding Merchants Millpondis one of the most unique in the state. It centers around the titular mill pondas well as a large swampy area. Hardwood trees and hanging Spanish moss givethe swamp a spooky, yet beautiful, atmosphere. Opportunities for hiking,bicycling, fishing, paddling, and horseback riding are numerous.
The campground has roughly 20campsites open to tents and RVs. Like most North Carolina state park camping,no RV hookups are available. The area is also notable for its 5 designatedbackpacking campsites and its 3 designated paddle-in canoe campsites.

Can You Camp Anywhere Along The Blue Ridge Parkway
Camping is only allowed in one of the Parkways eight designated camping areas. There are also three backcountry campgrounds which allow backpacking at certain sites with a permit.
While it seems backcountry camping is limited along the parkway, a lot of the backpacking we do in the North Carolina mountains is just off the parkway in Pisgah National Forest along the Appalachian Trail. In my opinion one of the best places to camp in the entire state is at Black Balsam Knob , approximately milepost 420 off the parkway. The short hike up to the mountain bald is less than a mile and a half, and is the perfect place to unplug for a night or two where you can get sweeping sunset and sunrise long range views from your tent.

Peaks Of Otter Campground
At milepost 85.9, you’ll find one of the parkway’s larger campgrounds Peaks of Otter is home to 86 tent sites and 58 RV sites. According to recreation.gov, this campground almost always has sites available, as there are 79 first-come, first-served options that must be booked in person. The park also has a lake stocked with fish, hiking, and a nearby lodge and restaurant.
