Pilot Mountain State Park
Pilot Mountain State Park is situated in two counties, Surrey and Yadkin. It is about a 20-mile drive north-west of Winston-Salem.
The central feature at Pilot Mountain State Park is the iconic geologic knob in its center. Called Big Pinnacle, it once served as a navigational landmark for the Saura tribe.
Outdoor enthusiasts will love the trails in the park. Hikers can hike around the mountain base, then up Little Pinnacle, which is located along the Yadkin River.
Rock climbing and rappelling is available to those that love that type of adventure.
Additional Camping Options Near Cherokee
If the campgrounds in Cherokee are already booked when you start planning your trip, expand your search to one of the nearby communities. For example, Flaming Arrow Campground and Fort Wilderness RV Park and Campground are located in the town of Whittier, which is just a mile outside of Cherokee.
There are also several campgrounds in the nearby town of Bryson City, including Ela Campground and Deep Creek Tube Center & Campground. You may even want to cast a wider net. After all, there are plenty of wonderful campgrounds throughout North Carolina.

We are located in Saunooke Village Business District: Shops, Restaurants, New Brewery and at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Elk live next door! The main hiking trail to the Visitor’s Center or to the GSMNP is across the river from us.
We are a small, 9-site RV Park with no bath house or cable.

The property has been owned by five Cherokee Indian Chiefs and is currently owned by the great grandson of Chief Osley Bird Saunooke.
Osley Bird Saunooke, chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and world heavyweight wrestling champion, was born near Cherokee, N.C., the son of an Indian father and an English mother. He was descended from a lineage of Indian chiefs for five generations. Saunooke attended Haskell Institute in Kansas, where he played tackle on the football team. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, drove a taxicab, and worked in the wheat fields and on the railroad in the Midwest.
During the depression he began wrestling professionally and at one time weighed in at 369 pounds. He won the heavyweight title in 1937 from Thor Johnson and held it for fourteen years. After taking part in more than five thousand matches, including seventeen main events in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, he retired from the ring in 1951 and returned to Cherokee to enter business.

Hanging Rock State Park
Hanging Rock State Park is one of the best RV campgrounds in NC mountains! Why? It has cool geological features and an abundance of outdoor recreation
Approximately 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park is in the Sauratown Mountain Range. The mountain range, named after the early Saura people that once inhabited the area. It towers over the nearby county and has peaks just under 2,600 feet in elevation.
Hanging Rock State Park gets its name from a large quartzite cliff that hangs above the valley below. It was established in 1936, covering only 3,100 acres, but has grown to over 7,900 since 2015.
The 73-site campground located in Hanging Rock State Park can accommodate RVs, but there are no hook-ups. Although you would be dry camping, there are picnic tables and grills available. Drinking water and showers are available in the campground.
The park is located near Stokes County, offering an outdoor wonderland for hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers, and rock climbers. Paddlers and anglers wont be bored either!
There are more than 20 miles of multi-use trails in Hanging Rock State Park. They can be used for hiking, riding or biking. There are also 8.4 miles of mountain biking trails available for your enjoyment.
Trails vary in intensity and length, so you might want to stop by the visitor center to grab a map. There is one 0.1 path leading to the Rock Garden for anyone with mobility impairments.

Cherokee/great Smokies Koa Campground
The Cherokee/Great Smokies KOA Holiday campground is located just outside the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It has 350 RV campsites, including some appropriate for big rigs, plus additional tent sites and camping cabins. Many sites overlook the Raven Fork River or are close to an on-site trout fishing pond.
The campground has a lot of amenities, including indoor and outdoor swimming pools and hot tubs, a jumping pillow, a playground, a well-stocked camp store, a clean bathhouse, a game room, and a fenced dog run. They also offer shuttle service to local attractions.
- RV sites range from $40 to $90 per night depending on size, power type, and whether sewer hookup is included.
- The average cost for tent sites is $26 per night.

You can spend a day or a week exploring the beautiful town of Cherokee. Located on a Cherokee Nation reservation, the town is home to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. You can tour the Oconaluftee Indian Village, which preserves the 18th-century lifestyle of the Cherokee people. The Mountainside Theatre performs a production of Unto These Hills every summer. And, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where you can camp or hike some of the Appalachian hiking trails.
You can also spend a day visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The region is also home to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, Mountain Farm Museum, and Mingus Mill. US 441 is also the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which begins in Cherokee. Take time to drive through the mountains on the parkway, and youll be amazed by the scenery. And dont forget to get a map of all twenty bear locations, which are located within a couple of miles of the town.
While youre in Cherokee, make sure you visit the Cherokee Casino Resort. This casino is more than just a gambling casino it features a 21-story luxury hotel with a conference center. There are also fine restaurants, headline entertainment, and other amenities for guests to enjoy. And if youre a big fan of history, youll love the museums in this area. The Museum of the Native American Indian has a lot to offer not just a casino!
