If the park photos alone dont convince you to visit Glacier National Park, know that its even more stunning in person. The park is home to some of the most pristine forests, meadows, mountains, and lakes. In fact, there are 762 lakes in Glacier National Park, only 131 of which are named.
Its also home to 26 glaciers and 175 mountains! Thats not to mention the wildlife youre guaranteed to see with 71 species of mammals roaming the park. Mountain goats are the official symbol of the park, and bears are spotted so often that youll want to be armed with bear spray at all times.
The campgrounds near the Apgar Visitor Center are large and offer an excellent basecamp for exploring the park. From the campground, its a short walk or bike ride to the village, where theres a small store, gift shop, restaurant, vendors for renting kayaks, and the beach on Lake McDonald, which is one of the parks best locations for sunset watching.
In addition to its natural beauty, Glacier National Park has other unique qualities that set it apart from other parks. It has over 300 historical structures that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
From chalets and hotels to visitor centers and barracks, youll feel like youre in Europe when you visit these buildings. The park also neighbors one of Montanas most popular ski towns, Whitefish. Its definitely worth a visit to stroll down the main street, check out the shops, and grab a bite to eat.

Campgrounds In And Around Glacier National Park
The Glacier National Park Travel Guide is a resource for those planning to tour Glacier National Park and/or Canada’s adjacent Waterton Lakes National Park. The adjacent national parks are typically visited at the same time and offer a variety of experiences. Both parks offer outstanding opportunities to view wildlife.
Glacier National Park is served by 8 modern campgrounds and five primitive campgrounds . Only two campgrounds have reservable sites the others are first-come first-served. Campgrounds can be as hectic as in Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks. The popular ones generally fill up very early in the morning and more often on weekends and holidays. So plan accordingly. There are no RV hookups or showers in park campgrounds. However showers can usually be purchased in Rising Sun, Many Glacier, and St. Mary.
Reservations can be made in season through National Recreation Reservation Service for St. Mary and Fish Creek campgrounds. RVs and trailers are not suitable for the primitive campgrounds due to the rough access roads and/or campground layouts. There is also a limited number of large RV/trailers sites in the modern campgrounds. RV owners would want to make a reservation during peak periods.
There are alternatives to camping inside the park. There are several National Forest and commercial campgrounds nearby.

I chose to stay in a spot up near the beginning of the unnamed road because the place was almost full. I had a nice spot with a fire ring and lots of quiet. The area described in the other post is a gorgeous spot. Its like a private lagoon surrounded by tall cliffs with trees.
I saw at least 4 good sized camper trailers there. Frankly, they are probably missing a leveling jack or two but it proves a passenger car should have no trouble getting in there. Once you start down that road with a trailer you are committed. So take the walk down beforehand ot will save you a lot of grief.

From your campsite at Many Glacier Campground, you have access to unparalleled views and hiking trails. This is a beautifully scenic area of the national park, and its also one thats less frequented, making it a tranquil and serene atmosphere. They are currently building showers and a laundry facility, which would make this the campground with the most amenities in the park.

Why Youll Love Fish Creek Campground
If youre coming to Glacier tiol Park from Whitefish or West Glacier, this is an ideal place to stay to get the most out of your time in Glacier tiol Park. The scenery surrounding this campground, from creeks and lakes to nearby mountain peaks, is unbeatable. There are plenty of bike paths and picnic areas around the lake, and although the campground is in a popular area of the park, its quite calm and quiet. The hosts are constantly present and very friendly.

Keep in mind that most of the campgrounds within the park operate on a first-come, first-served basisthough St. Mary and Many Glacier accept some reservations starting six months in advance. Where Are The Best Places To Go Camping In Glacier National Park
Personally, I find that each campsite in Glacier National Park has its own benefits. The biggest choice you will want to make is not so much which campground you want to reserve, but which side of the park would be best for the Glacier National Park itinerary you have.
Some of the most popular options tend to be Avalanche Campground and Apgar Campground. However, if you are planning on doing some of the hikes over on the east side of the park, then you might want to consider Many Glacier Campground or Rising Sun Campground.
Where you choose to stay completely depends on what you want to see in the park and which of the best hikes in Glacier National Park you want to hit up.
Note: St. Mary Campground and Rising Sun Campground will not be open summer 2021 due to Covid-19.
Best Time To Visit The Glacier National Park

Visiting the park in different seasons is rewarding in its own way. For instance, if you want to visit Glacier National park when the traffic is low, then the Spring season is the best time to do so.
Many people like visiting interesting places during the peak season for reasons well known to themselves. However, expect to pay extra money if you visit Glacier National Park during the peak seasons. The peak season in this park is usually during summer. You can also visit Glacier national park during winter, but you should keep in mind that the park restricts you from visiting different places.

Fewer Amenities Perfect For Us
For us, it was ideal. Lower price for our extended stay, less crowd, same fantastic location just 2-3 minutes from the east gate of the national park. It felt a bit more like real camping than so many of the parks we stayed in, and it was absolutely the perfect complement to our time spent wandering in Glacier.
Interestingly, this RV park is actually owned by the same folks that run the Red Eagle Motel just across the road that sits between the Johnsons restaurant and RV park. Good folks, straight shooters, and I just dont think you can go wrong with this one.
Things To Do At The Glacier National Park
There are several things to do at Glacier national park, and pretty much all of them are interesting. You can opt to go hiking in the mountains in the park. You can also choose to go on the whitewater rafting adventure with your friends. You can carry lunch with you when going on this adventure. You can also float in the middle of the Fork Flathead River. Spinning your wheels on the road as you watch the sun going down as you drive on the Going to the Sun Road is also enjoyable.
The Glacier national park has numerous water bodies that give it an irresistible adventure. You can play water sport games like the floating competition.For more experienced hikers The Grinnell Glacier is also another good place to do your hiking. It is a mark of glacial loss in the park due to global warming activities, and it covers 127 acres.

Glacier National Park Tip #1: See An Interpretive Programs + Join The Junior Ranger Program
Though we refer to these presentations as junior ranger programs, they are great for adults too.
The campgrounds and the visitor centers will have a calendar listing the talks the rangers will be doing each night.
I am always impressed with the presentations and highly recommend making time to see one.
If your child wants to get a junior ranger badge, they will need to attend one of these interpretive programs and get thier workbook signed by the ranger at the end.

The campsites are very primitive and likely to be noisy during the day as this seems to be a popular place to launch rafts and fishing boats

How To Get To The Glacier National Park
The Glacier national park is located in northwestern Flathead county and glacier county, Montana. It borders the United States and Canada. The nearest city to Glacier national park is Columbia Falls, Montana. The park covers 1,013,322 acres and is governed by the National Park Service.
Your case has been taken care of if you feel like traveling using an airplane because the park has an airport, the Glacier Park International Airport. Alternatively, you can use the Missoula or the Great Falls to drive to the park.
Glacier National Park Tip #: Go To Logan Pass
Logan Pass is the highest point on the Going-to-the Sun Road at 6,646 feet. Its 32 miles from the west entrance and 18 miles from the east entrance. Finding a parking spot here between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. is very difficult .
Logan Pass is where our favorite hike the Highline Trail begins from. There is another nice, and much shorter/easier hike from here called Hidden Lake Overlook that has gorgeous views and is great for younger kids. Mountain goats and bighorn sheep are often seen from here.

How Do I Make Glacier National Park Camp Reservations
Only a few campgrounds in Glacier National Park allow for reservations in advance. The rest of the campsites are open on a first-come, first-serve basis, so you will want to get up very early.
The two campsites in Glacier that you can make individual reservations in advance include Fish Creek and Many Glacier Campgrounds. You can make these at recreation.gov. You can also see other sites nearby that are also available.
If you are looking to get a spot at a campground where you cant make reservations in advance, then you will need to arrive early. Youll need to grab an envelope at the registration office at the entrance of each campground. Open sites available will not have a paper stub, while those that are already taken will have a stub on the postthat means you shouldnt set up there!
Once youve found your spot, fill out your information and insert your payment before putting your stub on the post and taking your envelope back to the registration office. Once you are finished camping, remove your paper stub from the site.
Comfort And Convenience In Paradise
Heres what you need to know about North American RV Park: It offers everything you need to be safe, comfortable and feel at home in this beautiful part of the country. You will have decent sized RV spots with grass and gravel surface and full hook-ups. They have a good-sized store at the entrance as well, for those items you completely forgot or ran out of on your excursion. Or for those snacks you just cant do without.
I actually had to buy a new fresh water hose at their store because ours was leaking horribly. Sure, it was a bit more expensive, but it was a convenient option and that hose lasted for the remainder of our travels and was a great purchase.
In addition to the store, they have a guest lounge with all kinds of amenities you can enjoy, including free coffee. Anyplace that offers free coffee gets an extra star in my book.
Essentially, there is nothing not to love here. Given its location, I found their rates extremely reasonable at $55 per night. Want to stay for a whole week? You get the 7th night free, so you will pay $330 for a full week of outdoor living just outside the gate of paradise . Now thats what I call a bargain!
