How To Find Even More Free Camping In Utah
- Apps My go-to apps for finding free campsites include FreeCampsites.net, iOverlander, Campendium, and the Dyrt.
- Online Maps Google Maps is a great tool for finding dispersed camping opportunities. I also like FreeRoam.app and Gaia GPS. Both let you turn on national forest and BLM boundaries to help make sure potential campsites are indeed on public land.
- MVUM Maps Both national forest and BLM ranger stations offer paper motor vehicle use maps to visitors. Dont be afraid to ask rangers for dispersed camping recommendations. Ive found some awesome campsites just by asking a ranger.
Yet another free camping option is to try out blacktop boondocking. Some stores, including Walmart and Cracker Barrel, allow free overnight parking for campers and boondockers. This does vary by locale so make sure to call ahead.
Although casino parking lot camping is another alternative in most states, its not an option in Utah. The state outlaws all forms of gambling, including tribal casinos. But you might be able to find a decent spot for casino camping just across the border in a neighboring state, such as Nevada.
My final recommendation is stealth camping. Although I personally only use this as a backup plan, a lot of campers swear by it. But, Utah has so many places for dispersed camping that you shouldnt have a problem finding a free campsite.
Free Camping On Southern Utah Forest Service Land
While Southern Utah is mostly comprised of red rock desert, there are still trees and mountains to be found in the southwest region. Fishlake National Forest and Dixie National Forest are the only two at or south of the I-70 interchange.
Fishlake National Forest is a goldmine for relatively established dispersed campsites with 35 dispersed camping locations. You cant go wrong traveling down any of the forest service roads to find a site that suits you.
Dixie National Forest also offers quite a few dispersed camping spots, but if privacy is what youre after, consider following FR 20048 and FR 20049 for some prime pull-offs in the heart of the forest. Here, youll also be close to Hendrickson Lake Trailhead, a moderate 1.8-mile hike to an aspen-surrounded lake.

Dispersed Camping In Minnesota State Forests
Dispersed camping is allowed in Minnesota state forests. Dispersed camping is different from camping in a designated campground. It is a wilderness experience for campers who enjoy camping far from others and do not need any amenities.

Ronsheim Campground Harrison State Forest
The tiny Ronsheim Campground in Harrison State Forest has just seven paved sites. So if you are after some privacy and solitude during your camping trip, this area is ideal. There is a tiny lake nearby with a walking trail that ends at it.
Everything else is basic and what youd expect from a primitive camping site. As a bonus, there are many trash bins available.
The beautiful terrain of the region is complemented by its hilly nature, which makes it an excellent location for some solitude. There are also several horseback riding routes that are popular among day hikers.

Free Camping Near The Popular Bonneville Salt Flats
First, lets start with one of the more popular camping options! The Bonneville Salt Flats draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, especially during the middle of August when race car enthusiasts visit for Speed Week, then again in September and October for World of Speed and World Finals, respectively. This portion of the Salt Flats is also known as the Bonneville Speedway for the multiple land speed records that have been set.
All thats to say, if youre looking for free camping and solitude in the Bonneville Salt Flats, try to camp in between each of these events. May-October are generally the best times to camp at the flats, after spring runoff has dried and the rainy season hasnt yet begun.
While youre not allowed to camp overnight on the Bonneville Salt Flats, the area is surrounded by accessible BLM land. To the west of the Salt Flats, vanlifers can find respite in the Silver Island Mountains, an area of BLM land surrounded by a 54-mile loop.
Along the Silver Island Mountain Backcountry Byway, youll find hundreds of primitive campsites with prime views of the Salt Flats, or the Pilot Range along the Utah/Nevada border. There are multiple hiking options here, leading to the tops of Grahams Summit, Campbell Peak, Jenkins Peak, and Lamus Peak. A map and compass are recommended.

Public land comprises the majority of the west. With roughly 63% of all Utah land remaining public, there are plenty of opportunities for free camping near Salt Lake City, far into the flat reaches of the West Desert, and throughout the southern red rock. The road in is Dirt and 0.5 miles from a paved road. There are 6-15 campsites at this location and the maximum RV length is 35 feet. You may stay 16 days, after which you must move at least 10 miles. at Toms Best Spring Road Dispersed Camping.
Stopped at the ranger station in Dixie National Forest and they told me about Toms Best Spring Road otherwise known as Forest Road 117. A well maintained dirt road with multiple pull off sites suitable for tent camping or large RVs. There were several 5th wheels unhooked from the trucks for hunting season .
Park Ranger told me that you can camp anywhere along this road where theres an already established fire ring. She also warned not to go further than 2-3 miles down the road since it becomes narrow and there are limited turn-around opportunities. Watch out for cow pies since this is open cattle range.

St. George is on the doorstep of some of Utah’s most outstanding natural areas, from red rock canyons to lakes and beautiful soft-sand beaches. Camping in the area is awesome.
Many of the prime locations for pitching a tent and setting up an RV are found in nearby state parks or in BLM areas, but if you are looking for a more urban experience, you’ll also find RV parks right in St. George.
While some places offer first-come, first-served sites, your best bet is to plan ahead and reserve a site if you know your travel dates. This is particularly true of state parks, which can usually be booked up to 16 weeks in advance, although some parks offer first-come, first-served sites. Most BLM campgrounds do not take reservations, apart from group sites. RV parks are best reserved well in advance.

Red Cliffs Recreation Area Campground
For privacy, red rock scenery, and a true taste of nature, it’s hard to beat the Red Cliffs Campground, northeast of St. George and Hurricane, in Red Cliffs Recreation Area.
This is a BLM campground, well off the beaten path, and perfect for relaxing. Hiking and biking are popular activities, with trails leaving right from, or near, the campground.
Campsites are set along Quail Creek, or against rock cliffs and boulders, and offer considerable privacy. With a natural water source and trees, the campground also attracts local wildlife, including squirrels, roadrunners, and a variety of other birds.
Red Cliffs has 10 campsites, all of which are first-come, first-served, and accommodates tents and small RV’s. The access road runs through a tunnel with a height clearance of 11 feet and 9 inches. Facilities consist of pit toilets and water taps spread around the campground.

SAND HOLLOW STATE PARK Utahs 44 state parks have grown increasingly popular in recent years, and especially last year. The total number of state park visitors in 2020 was almost 10.6 million, an increase of 33% from 2019 when Utahs 44 state parks saw just under 8 million visitors.
Sand Hollow State Park was the most visited state park in 2020, with over 1.3 million visitors. This is a significant increase compared to the previous years visitation number of just under 865,000. This visitation trend is expected to continue through the 2021 session.
To help improve the visitor experience during these popular recreation months, management at Sand Hollow State Park has chosen to close primitive beach camping for the remainder of the season. This change allows park visitors a significant amount of additional room to spread out along the beach during the day-use hours.
The increase in visitation means that the park fills more quickly, especially on weekends, Sand Hollow State Park Manager Jonathan Hunt said. When we reach capacity, we cant let more people in until others leave. We dont like turning away visitors, so this change helps us better serve the public who want to come and enjoy this beautiful area.

Free Camping On Aep Recreation Land
The starting point is a cluster of campgrounds near the Wilds, just 90 minutes east of Columbus. Situated on American Electric Power AEP ReCreation Land, this is the largest single outdoor recreation facility in Ohio and one of the most diverse. It offers hunting, fishing, camping, boating, hiking, biking, and horseback trails, all at no charge. All camping is primitive, but vault toilets and hand water pumps are usually present. Two of the 6 campgrounds lie within Jesse Owens State Park. All are free but require a permit to be completed and displayed during your stay.
Heading south from the town of Cumberland, Renrock Road winds through the heart of ReCreation Land. Bicentennial Campground K is the first one you come to. Down a gravel road on the left, the campground is situated on a long loop next to a small fishing lake. There are campsites next to the lake as well as further back in the woods.
Continuing on Hwy 83 to the Windy Hill Park E on the right , Woodgrove Road on the left leads to the Woodgrove Campground H. A loop road goes around a big grassy area and also extends back to an area with longer-term campers.
Continuing on Hwy 83 less than a mile on the left is Sawmill Road, which leads to Sawmill Campground D. This campground has a caretaker, covered bridge, and an assortment of sites on a combination of grass, gravel, and dirt on the edge of the woods.
