What To Pack For Staying At Campgrounds In Northern California

Lightweight tent: This lightweight North Face Stormbreak 2-person tent weighs only 5 pounds 5 ounces, which is a nice low weight given the cost. Its a good 3-season tent with loads of headroom, easy pitching design for fuss-free set-up, and theres plenty of room for two people to share.

Sleeping bag : While you maybe camping in California, that doesnt mean it doesnt get cold at night especially on the Northern California coast! You can spend a fortune on a sleeping bag, but you dont have to. For a comfortable sleeping bag that wont break the budget, I recommend the REI Trailbreak 30 and . You can go more high-tech, but then youre looking around the $300 range. Great if you camp a lot, but for beginners, you may want to start with a more affordable version until you decide you really are a camping person.

Sleeping pad: This is what takes you from cold, uncomfortable nights on rocky ground to tent comfort! You can buy a cheaper version like the REI Trailbreak Self-Inflating Pad, but Id recommend going with the Flash Thermal if hiking the trail in spring or fall, when the nights can get really cold!

Note: Some Northern California campgrounds do have tent pads you can use, so this may not be necessary check the site amenities above for each potential campground.

Mug: Youll want a mug for morning coffee or tea! Bonus points if it has a cute design for morning campsite snaps, too.

Fall camping in Upstate NY: Best campgrounds to try this autumn ...

Image from The Dyrt camper Michelle C.

If you want to camp in Yosemite but dont want to face the crowds in the Valley, head an hour and a half up Tioga Pass Road to Tuolumne Meadows. Its one of the rare car-accessible campgrounds in the High Sierras. Located at 8,600 feet, the campground is only open during the summer months because of the snow. Half of the 304 campsites are reservable online. Half are reserved for walk-ups. During the peak weekends in July and August, there can be a line in the morning. Early or late in the season, though, it can be pretty easy to find a spot.

There are spaces for RVs and trailers up to 35 feet, with a dumping station but no hookups. There are six wheelchair-accessible sites reserved for those with disabilities. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and food locker. Restrooms have drinking water and flushing toilets, but there are no showers.

The campground is a popular stopping point for thru-hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail. There are hike-in campsites for those with a backcountry permit. There are also some group and equestrian campsites available.

Find free northern California campgrounds from your car without WiFi. The Dyrt PRO lets you download maps and campgrounds without cell service. My alternative to using pro would be to drive back out to cell service.

BURNEY FALLS & HEART LAKE IN WINTER | NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP VLOG

Image from The Dyrt camper Rachel O.

The Lost Coast is a 60-mile stretch of wilderness along the ragged coastline of Mendocino and Humboldt Counties, part of the King Range Conservation Area. Hikers and backpackers love the empty sandy beaches, windy bluffs and many possibilities for wildlife sightings. Sinkyone Wilderness State Park lies at the southern portion of the region, and is a perfectly hidden northern California camping option.

The campground at Usal Beach is the largest and most accessible campground in the parkhowever, RVs are not recommended because of the difficult road getting in. All 25 sites are first come, first served. There are some sites right on the beach, and some a little more inland among the grasses. There is no fresh running water, so bring your own or bring a good water filter.

Im lucky enough to live within an hour from this amazing place. Granted it has no facilities as budgets have been hacked and slashed, but this isnt the kind of place for luxury camping. This is the kind of place that will renew your soul, it will make you feel alive and allow the stress of the everyday world to wash away. The Dyrt camper Matthew G.

Rancho Seco Recreation Area

Scenic Rating: 6/10

Region: Sacramento and Gold Country

There is a shortage of campgrounds close to Sacramento, so this one about 35 miles from the state capital comes in handy. This public facility has a 160-acre lake surrounded by 400 acres of open space and includes trails for walking and bicycling. The centerpiece of this recreation area is the lake, which is especially popular for fishing and sailboarding. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, and fishing derbies are held during the winter. Other fish species include bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and catfish. Live bait is prohibited and only electric motors are allowed.

A bonus is that the lake level remains constant year-round, and since the lake is fed by the Folsom South Canal, the water is warm in summer. Swimming is popular and there is a large sandy beach with summer lifeguard service. Pedal boats and kayaks can also be rented on weekends in summer. Tent sites are situated along the lake and a seven-mile nature trail loop is also next to the lake. The Amanda Blake Memorial Wildlife Refuge is here, and visitors can observe exotic captive wildlife that has been rescued from circuses and other performing groups. Migratory birds, including bald eagles, winter at the lake. What are those two large towers? Theyre remnants of the now-closed Rancho Seco nuclear power-generating station.

China Camp State Park

For history buffs and tent-campers, this site offers both a history lesson and shoreline accommodations. Once used as a Chinese fishing/shrimping village in the 1880s, it now exhibits a history museum while preserving the natural marshes, grasslands, and forests. Explore the San Pablo Bay harbor with watersports or wonder through the animal-dense forest.
