Located three miles east of Eagle Nest in the 33,116-acre Colin Neblett Wildlife Area, Cimarron Canyon State Park is home to picturesque landscapes of soaring palisade cliffs and glistening rivers and streams. Extending for eight miles Tolby Creek and Ute Park along the Cimarron Canyon, the park features three developed day-use areas and campgrounds offering numerous individual sites for RV or tent camping, full restrooms with flushing toilets and potable water, however, no electricity. The park also has a newly constructed visitor’s center, several hiking trails for year-round use, which boast lovely views of waterfalls along the way.

Angel Peak Scenic Area
The Angel Peak Scenic Area is a recreation area managed by the Bureau of Land Management that is home to over 10,000 acres of rugged terrain, deep canyons, colorful badlands, and the almost 7,000-foot Angel Peak. Located about south of Bloomfield in San Juan County, the Angel Peak Scenic Area has a campground and three picnic areas along the canyon rim overlooking Angel Peak with nine sites available for tent camping, with picnic tables on concrete pads, gravel pathways, and fire grills. No electrical hookups or water is available, and Angel Peak is subject to seasonal extremes, and visitors should be prepared for changing weather.

But even during the height of summer, you can nestle your tent in shaded pine and spruce forest and fall asleep to the gentle sounds of Columbine Creek, which flows past the campsites to the Red River. The forest floor is dotted with bright red thimbleberry flowers and the yellow columbine that gives the canyon its name. For a morning hike, hit the Columbine-Twining National Recreation Trail, which leads the few miles to the Columbine Hondo Wilderness Area. If you register in advance for a llama trek with Wild Earth Llama Adventures, a cordial camelid will carry your pack along this trail to a lunch spot in a wildflower meadow.

Campgrounds In New Mexico: Elephant Rock Campground
Elephant Rock Campground rests at 8,400 feet above sea level next to the Red River and offers access to the river, which is well-stocked for fishing and the nearby Eagle Rock Lake. The single loop campground features 20 individual sites, potable water, and vault toilets, and each site has a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring with grill. The campground meanders up a hillside with several sites tucked in among a mixture of aspen, fir, pine and spruce trees, and other with stone terracing. Recreational activities in and around the campground range from water-based fun in the Red River to hiking the Fawn Lakes Trail, which is located three miles east of Elephant Rock Campground.

Aguirre Spring Recreation Area Organ Mountainsdesert Peaks National Monument

The Organ MountainsDesert Peaks National Monument preserves nearly half a million acres of rocky peaks and narrow canyons, much of it in Las Crucess backyard. Aguirre Spring Campground has the convenience of being close to the states second-largest city, yet its location on the east side of the mountains makes the site feel remote. Here the Organs stunning panorama of needle-like spires rises just outside your tent. The mountains seem to hug the campground, protecting the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem of yucca, juniper, and sage. Its some of the best desert camping in the state. Two trails depart from the site: The six-mile Baylor Pass Trail climbs to a saddle with views of the Mesilla Valley, while the four-mile Pine Tree Trail forms a loop at the base of the mountains.

Riana Campground is located on a 150 ft. bluff overlooking Abiquiu Lake, one hour northwest of Santa Fe. The lake is on the Rio Chama, a tributary of the Rio Grande, at an elevation of 6,400 feet.
Riana provides flush toilets, showers, and drinking water, as well as picnic shelters, grills, lantern posts, and tent pads. A playground and dump station are located on-site. There is fishing, boating and swimming at Abiquiu Lake and art, hiking, workshops and seminars at Ghost Ranch. Additional activities nearby include hiking around the lake and along the Rio Chama north of Abiquiu, Plaza Blanca , the Georgia OKeeffe museum, and Penitente morada.
Riana Campground hosts 52 campsites, 13 of which have electric and water hookups.

Access to the Angel Peak Scenic Area is off US Highway 550, 15 miles south of Bloomfield on County Road 7175. Follow the gravel road along the canyon rim for approximately six miles to reach the campground, or stop at one of three developed picnic areas along the way to enjoy the view or have a bite to eat. Take plenty of water and watch for rattlesnakes.

Youll find stunning views, historical mysteries and a wide variety of landscapes to explore. There are plenty of boondocking options throughout the state. Here are some of our favorites.
Santa Fe National Forest
For the fold that imagined New Mexico as a mostly barren desert, a National Forest being at the beginning of this list must come as a surprise. This isnt a small, random cropping of trees though. Coming in at over 1.5 million acres, Santa Fe National Forest puts some wetter climate forests to shame.
There are twenty-seven developed campgrounds throughout the park, each one offering a different level of comfort. Some of the more developed ones have restroom facilities complete with hot showers, fire rings, picnic tables, and a range of RV sites with full hookups. Some of the more secluded ones are strict tent sites that require you to bring water and walk a fair distance for the nearest toilet. If you feel the need to be even more off the grid than that, the park allows for primitive camping just about anywhere on grounds, as long as its not in an explicitly forbidden area.
Since the park area is so big, there are considerable geographical differences in the campgrounds too. There are nearly 10,000 feet of varying elevations to pick from, and quite a handful of biomes. The most challenging of these campsites is Rio Chama.
The dirt road through the forest to this site is so rough, that not even ATVs are permitted on it during poor weather. Those that make the journey are rewarded with an isolated camping experience surrounded by beautiful multi-colored cliffs. Further up the same road is an active Christain monastery that is open to visitors.
